The Opportunity:
WSP is currently recruiting for a Radiation Protection Specialist with experience in the nuclear industry, to join our Construction & Remediation group. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the site's radiation protection program alongside a dynamic team.
This opportunity is to join the WSP team responsible for the execution and construction of the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). The PHAI represents the federal government's response to the community-requested solution for the cleanup and local, long-term, safe management of historic low-level radioactive waste in the municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington.
Please note we will consider candidates based in various locations throughout Canada, but this opportunity is based at the project site in Port Hope, Ontario

A day in the life:
What you'll bring to WSP ...
** Radiation Protection Specialists are generally not involved in tasks that would be considered heavy labour. However, the site is environmentally challenging with some temperature extremes involved (very cold to very warm). Precautions are always utilized in these cases. You will be expected to walk outdoors (sometimes in rugged terrain) regularly while carrying instrumentation. RP Specialists may be required to use ladders.
All RP staff must be capable of wearing PPE, including respirators if required. Site-specific radiation protection PPE will be provided.

A day in the life:
- You will measure gamma radiation fields and determine appropriate zoning.
- You will develop surface contamination survey programs using radiation detectors or swipe sampling.
- You will direct RP staff on the collection of air samples.
- You will manage personal dosimeters and radon monitors for the workforce.
- You will ensure control and calibration of all radiation detection equipment.
- You will deliver training to site workers and provide mentorship for both junior and senior RP technicians.
- You will summarize and analyze routine data for compilation into routine reports.
- You will ensure compliance with site radiation safety procedures by workers and visitors.
- You will oversee the maintenance of RP facilities and equipment.
- You will support the RP manager and site management teams to develop in-field solutions to site-specific issues as they arise.
- You will demonstrate an understanding of CNSC regulations and how to apply them to a working environment.
- You will understand dose assessments and how to correctly apply weighting factors for the purposes of dose reporting.
- You will generate radiation work permits for a variety of situations, taking into account other organizational requirements related to operations, environmental, health and safety, etc.
- You will work in an exciting, fast-paced team environment with other RP staff, site staff, other employees, and individuals on site.
What you'll bring to WSP ...
- Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, radiation science or health physics (or related field) preferred with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrate an understanding of radiation safety principles consistent with their background and training.
- Ability to communicate in English clearly and concisely, both written and verbal.
- Ability to sort, compile and summarize routine data using typical Microsoft Office products.
- Perform all assigned tasks diligently and thoroughly assuring complete and accurate documentation as required.
- Demonstrate an understanding of CNSC regulations and how to apply them to a working environment.
- Strong technical writing and reporting skills.
- Understanding of dose assessments and how to correctly apply weighting factors for the purposes of dose reporting.
- Ability to generate radiation work permits for a variety of situations taking into account other organizational requirements related to operations, environmental, health and safety, etc.
- Demonstrated good judgement in fast paced environments
- Knowledge of TDG is considered an asset
- Eligible for CNL Reliability Status (individual must have 3 full years of verifiable history in Canada, USA, UK, New Zealand and/or Australia to be eligible).
