DescriptionThe Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for managing Saint John’s Health Center Foundation’s (SJHCF) financial operations, ensuring the organization’s financial health and sustainability. This role will oversee all financial reporting, an annual operating budget of $11 million, investments and total assets of close to $350 million, forecasting, financial analysis, and compliance requirements. The CFO will work closely with the CEO and the SJHCF Board of Trustees to develop and implement financial and investment strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals. The CFO is a member of SJHCF’s executive leadership team (ET) and is responsible for the financial and investment leadership of the Foundation.This position requires a broad range of knowledge and experience across numerous business disciplines including investments, accounting, fund accounting, financial management, risk management, compliance, and gifts and grants processing. The CFO will interface extensively with the CFO for Providence’s Southern Coastal Region, as well as Saint John’s Health Center’s ministry leadership team and Saint John’s Physician Partners accounting representatives in administering grants and reimbursing expenses. This position is accountable for working with the entire Foundation team to determine strategies and efforts to achieve operational goals and budgets.Essential Functions:Financial ManagementDevelop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, and other financial systems.Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO and Board of Trustees, providing analysis and recommendations as needed.Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements.Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers.Lead and/or work with outside counsel on all legal/compliance functions for the foundation’s protection.Budgeting and ForecastingDevelop and oversee the $11 million annual budgeting process, working closely with the ET and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets.Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis to the CEO and Board of Trustees.Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making.InvestmentsProvide professional oversight of the foundation’s investment consultant and advisors and work closely with the foundation’s Investment Committee to ensure effective administration of its investment program.Work with the foundation’s investment consultant to monitor investment performance on total investments of $250 million (including endowments of close to $100 million).Ensure compliance with the Investment Committee’s policy guidelines, promptly and accurately meet Investment Committee calls and distribution allocations, and report to the Investment Committee and the Board.Ensure timely and accurate reporting of investment activity.Stay apprised of new developments and opportunities that relate to investment strategies in the sector.Strategic Planning and LeadershipWork closely with the CEO and ET to develop and implement strategic plans and goals that support the organization’s mission and vision.Lead both the Finance and Investment Committees, collaborating with Committee Chairs and other committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization.Provide support to, and attend all meetings of the Audit and Compliance Committee.Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.Model and instill a service orientation and continuous improvement culture that inspires a high-performing professional staff; use strong organizational planning and communication skills to implement comprehensive foundation-wide systems and decision-making rooted in a best practice mindset.Empower and develop a team with diverse skill sets to competitively strive for improved operational solutions and sustainable growth.Cultivate buy-in, commitment, and teamwork through alignment, accountability, and rewarding team accomplishments.Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and implement strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.Board Relations and ReportingReport on the financial performance of the organization to the Board of Trustees, including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities.Collaborate with the CEO and Board of Trustees to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organization’s values and strategic goals.Represent the organization at internal and external events and meetings, providing financial guidance and support as needed.Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements.Executive LeadershipThought partner to the CEO on all financial matters including current investment approach and future strategies and ensuring that financial and investment operations functions and offerings are aligned with the foundation’s mission, values, and purpose.Collaborate with the CEO and ET to steward resources at the foundation; provide the internal structure required with an emphasis on refining current priorities and with an eye to the future; regularly undertake strategic modelling, planning and stress-testing; and align resources to meet agreed-upon goals.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related fields.Master's degree in Business Administration (preferred).12 or more years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a nonprofit organization.9 years of demonstrated leadership experience.5 years of experience in fund accounting (preferred).CPA (preferred).CFA or experience with investment management (preferred).About ProvidenceAt Providence, our strength lies in Our Promise of “Know me, care for me, ease my way.” Working at our family of organizations means that regardless of your role, we’ll walk alongside you in your career, supporting you so you can support others.
