The University of Virginia, Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking applications for a full-time cardiac surgeon to serve as the Surgical Director of Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Assist Devices. This faculty position will be at the Associate or full Professor level. Rank and tenure status will be dependent upon qualifications. As Surgical Director, the candidate will be responsible for partnering with the Medical Director for Heart Transplantation to plan, organize, conduct and direct the activities of the Heart Transplant Program. Clinically, candidates must be competent in a broad array of Cardiac Surgery. The ideal candidate should be committed to clinical quality, patient safety, and multi-disciplinary teamwork.

The University of Virginia Health System is a major referral institution with several system growth initiatives in process. The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has an outstanding national reputation for performing the highest-quality cardiothoracic surgery at the No. 1 hospital in Virginia and has produced some of the most renowned leaders in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The division is comprised of three sections: Adult Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery. Our ACGME approved, Thoracic Surgery Residency program currently has 3 pathways to completion:

• The 6-year Integrated Program (i6 program) is designed for residents entering directly from medical school for training in cardiothoracic surgery.

• The Traditional Senior Thoracic Residency Program (2-year traditional program) consists of 2 consecutive years of clinical training in adult cardiac, general thoracic, and pediatric cardiac surgery following completion of a general surgery residency.

• The Joint Residency Program (4 3 program) allows a superb general surgery resident at UVA to enter our thoracic residency directly, maximizing his or her experience in cardiothoracic surgery.

UVA is an excellent clinical, research and teaching environment at one of the top universities in the country. It is located in beautiful Charlottesville with easy access to the Blue Ridge Mountains, the eastern shore and the nation's Capital. This is to include easy access to the following airports: Charlottesville (CHO)(7.5 miles), Richmond International (RIC)(80 miles) and Dulles International Airport(IAD)(103 miles). Charlottesville is one of the best places to live in the U.S. with a vibrant university town life, culture, music, restaurants, excellent schools, and outdoor activities, etc.

This is an Exempt level, benefited position. The University will perform a background check and pre-employment health and drug screening prior to employment.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Must have an MD, be board-certified in Thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery

• Licensed or eligible to be licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia

• Strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills

• Advanced knowledge and experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices is required

• Demonstrated interest in academic medicine

• Passion for innovation in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery

• Mentorship capabilities to work with residents and junior faculty
