The Role:

Afterschool Group Leaders at Educational Alliance will coach and mentor school aged youth; by enhancing social skills, and character development. Using a mentor model, we will support youth from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We are committed to providing educational support, using a social emotional lens. We value our own professional development and successes that lead to an enriching experience for our program participants because we bring our best selves to work and put the needs of the students first during after school hours (M-F from 2 to 6pm).

Mentoring• Take the lead in empowering youth through quality mentoring relationships• Support youth development through academic, health and wellness, sports, and/or arts programming• Serve as positive role models by building self-esteem, motivation and emotional capacity• Effectively develop a rapport with participants and parents; while maintaining safety and confidentiality

Planning and Organization• Plan and submit lesson plans and lead student activities• Engage with participants during program hours, ensuring student safety and the development of positive relationships• Keep daily attendance records, attend regular supervision meetings and participate in the program evaluation process• Participate in the planning and facilitation of special events and psycho-educational, youth development and academic workshops• Perform special projects and other related duties as assigned by supervisors

Commitment• Commitment to being available to work during after school hours 2-6pm daily Monday - Friday• Consistency in attendance• Able to communicate clearly with program staff; openness to giving and receiving feedback• Able to build positive partnerships with day school teachers to support overall success for our youth• Willingness to work extended hours when school is not in session (i.e., Winter Recess, Mid-Winter Recess, Spring Recess, etc.)• Willingness to participate in professional development activities, including evening hours

Agency Safety• Must adhere to Educational Alliance and site specific safety standards• Comply with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures• Maintain clean and safe work environment, notify supervisor of any hazardous issues

Your Qualifications• High School Diploma with 1 year of professional experience working with youth. Some college preferred• Previous experience in youth programming or summer camp is a PLUS• A desire to build one-on-one relationships with youth in program community and participate in a variety of activities• Passionate about working with culturally diverse youth Flexible team player, has the ability to think on your feet• Strong written and verbal communication skills• Ability to work collaboratively with co-group mentor/team• Ability to effectively affirm and value diversity of ethnicity, language, religion, sexual identity and gender of our youth• Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional, courteous and friendly manner• A great sense of humor• Inspired through creativity and able to bring these talents to the work site• High emotional intelligence• Bilingual in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian is a PLUS
