GENERAL SUMMARY:

Summary:Assists the Laboratory Section Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in the operational and/or technical management of assigned section(s) by ensuring proper day to day operations of the laboratory discipline(s) and serves as a resource person for problem solving. Responds to changes in workload as necessary, and leads adjustments in work assignments in real-time fashion in the absence of the supervisor. The Lead is accountable for ensuring that appropriate and timely specimen handling, delivery, specimen testing, results reporting and customer service are provided in efficient and cost effective manner in accordance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures. The Lead works independently in cooperation with the Laboratory Section Supervisor or Laboratory Manager and/or Out Patient Service Center Manager (if applicable). In the absence of a supervisor, may be designated to serve as acting supervisor, with all incumbent duties of the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Assists the Laboratory Section Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in the operational and/or technical management of assigned section(s) by ensuring proper day to day operations of the laboratory discipline(s) and serves as a resource person for problem solving. Responds to changes in workload as necessary, and leads adjustments in work assignments in real-time fashion in the absence of the supervisor. The Lead is accountable for ensuring that appropriate and timely specimen handling, delivery, specimen testing, results reporting and customer service are provided in efficient and cost effective manner in accordance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures. The Lead works independently in cooperation with the Laboratory Section Supervisor or Laboratory Manager and/or Out Patient Service Center Manager (if applicable). In the absence of a supervisor, may be designated to serve as acting supervisor, with all incumbent duties of the supervisor.2. Performs all procedures within prescribed turnaround times. Performs proficiency testing with thorough and timely documentation. Demonstrates ability to appropriately prioritize work at all times. Calls all critical/significant values as soon as available and documents action per protocol. Enforces adherence to same by others. Performs tasks of Medical Laboratory Scientist as needed during periods of peak workload and in the absence of staff members. Independently performs all technical duties of the supervisor during their absence.3. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Takes inventory of section and orders section supplies to ensure an adequate stock is available. Maintains reagent logs. Ensures volumes of all supplies are sufficient for the following shifts. Coordinates instrument service calls. Acts as contact person for vendors.4. Assigns tasks to staff scheduled in their section on a daily basis. Responsible for training and competency of students and section personnel with appropriate documentation. Provides input to supervisor for 30 day, 60 day, 90 day, 6 month, and annual checklists / conversations / performance appraisals. Performs direct observations of all assigned staff as part of periodic / annual competency assessments. Participates in the selection of personnel. Leads peer interviewing teams.5. Embraces culture of safety by ensuring all Infection Control / Safety protocols are followed at all times. Maintains Hazardous Chemical logs, ensures MSD sheets are readily available to staff. Disinfects work areas prior to end of each shift. Ensures adequate staff on daily basis for assigned areas and arranges for coverage for all unexpected scheduling vacancies in the absence of the supervisor.6. Reviews applicable regulatory standards and brings any instances of non-compliance to the attention of the section supervisor. Assigns and rotates proficiency testing samples among all assigned techs. Assures proficiency test results are accurately and completely submitted by the required due date. Investigates unsuccessful results and ensures proficiency reports are reviewed by all required parties per protocol. Reviews all equipment and maintenance records monthly. Monitors instrument records to effectively identify trends that may indicate a problem with instrument performance. Assists section supervisor in developing / validating / writing and implementing new procedures.7. Performs, analyzes, and reports statistical analysis of data. Performs linearity studies, calibrations, and patient correlations per protocol. Performs and provides for daily review of patient results. Performs daily monitoring and monthly submission of QC results and review of charts, compiling PI reports, and ad hoc studies. Recommends remedial action, adjusts means per protocol. Oversees QC and reagent lot rollovers.8. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:

Education-

Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics.(OR Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology for Incumbents in position prior to 2005).Credential Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Three years of relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent position in a high-complexity laboratory Preferred: Five years of relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent position in a high-complexity laboratory
