Candidates who complete the application and attach copies of their certifications successfully, will be invited to take the written exam (dates TBD). There are no make-up dates for the written exam. Qualified applicants will be notified if they are eligible to take the written exam. In preparation for taking the exam, you can visit for exam preparation materials. This counts for 30% of your final score.

Those who successfully pass the written exam will be invited to take the physical agility test (PAT). Eligible candidates will be notified of the available dates, times, and location. If you have successfully completed the PAT with another jurisdiction within the last year, please attach your certification to your application. Candidates who successfully pass the physical agility test (PAT) will sit before a panel to complete a Skills/Oral exam, available dates, times and location will be provided. Please clickHere to download the National Registry Patient Skills scoresheet.Once the Skills/Oral exam is successfully completed, those that passed will sit for a panel interview, available dates, times and location will be provided. This counts for 40% of your final score.

Once the interview process has concluded, your cumulative scores from each step in the process will determine your final score, which will then determine if you've made it on to the eligibility list. Once the eligibility list is finalized, you will receive an email with your placement on the list and the next steps. The eligibility list is good for 1 year and as positions become vacant, you will be updated on your placement on the list.

**Please note: This position requires the use of respirators for respiratory protection. Charles County follows OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 (Respiratory Protection) Standard. Charles County does not permit respirators with tight-fitting facepieces to be worn by employees who have Facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function. No exemptions or waivers will be issued by the County Safety Office.

Provides basic life support (BLS) medical care to ill and injured persons at the scene of a medical emergency or other traumatic events. This is skilled specialized work as a Maryland certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Accountable for responding to all assigned calls for assistance in the most appropriate and efficient manner, providing the highest standard of patient care while providing a safe and hazard-free environment, under the direction of the Chief of Emergency Medical Services. Contributes to overall patient care in the areas of patient assessment, treatment, packaging, and transport. Some conditions can be handled following general rules and guidelines, while more complicated problems may require assistance from EMT 2's, Paramedics or Supervisors. Required to assist EMT 2's and ALS providers when necessary and appropriate. Interacts throughout the County internally, and with patients and their families externally and interacts with various first responder agencies and healthcare providers, physicians, and hospital personnel, externally.Essential Job Functions

Treats individuals who are ill, injured and/or in an emotionally distressed state in an appropriate manner and according to BLS guidelines. Performs necessary emergency medical care to ill, injured, or convalescent persons at the site of an incident and en-route to the hospital or other destination as prescribed by MIEMSS.Stabilizes the condition of the patients and assists in extricating victims from wreckage. Performs emergency medical and first aid examinations and treatment such as bandaging wounds, control of bleeding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, insertion of oral and nasopharyngeal airways.Provides quality patient care utilizing thorough knowledge and appropriate administration of BLS interventions as outlined by state, county and/or local protocols, and completes detailed patient reports.Assists ALS providers in direction and assistance to others in general execution of EMS duties; maintenance of apparatus and equipment; and general housekeeping activities.Performs required inspections to ensure medical supplies are stocked; equipment and apparatus is clean and operational at all times. Assures that all documentation required by individual Fire/EMS stations, MIEMSS and the EMS Division are accurate and completed in a timely manner, prior to submission.Participates in post incident analysis with co-workers to point out positive points, assure quality documentation, areas of improvement and to assure adequate skills are maintained.Participates in approved continuing education training classes, various meetings, and skills review when necessary.Maintain a strict level of security concerning confidentiality of all information and protected health care information.Reports to work on time with assigned safety equipment and ready for duty.Assists other emergency service agencies as required/requested.Performs other related job duties as assigned.Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education and Experience:High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).

Licenses or Certifications:External CandidatesMust have and maintain a current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Maryland, certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).Must obtain during 1st year of employment; Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course, Haz-Mat Awareness and Incident Management Systems Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700 and 800.Internal CandidatesMust have all of the following training, certifications and/or licenses; certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Maryland, certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course, Haz-Mat Awareness and Incident Management Systems Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200,700 and 800.Note: Some licenses and/or certifications require periodic renewal. The employee must maintain them throughout employment in this position. All candidates must have a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDSDriving emergency vehicles is a substantial portion of the job. WORK ENVIRONMENTThe nature of the work involves unpredictable circumstances that may include the threat or actual presence of harm. The work is performed indoors and outdoors in emergency situations that may expose the employee to a variety of dangerous conditions, such as inclement weather, hazardous materials, chemicals, smoke, or weakened/unstable structures. Employees are exposed to physically and mentally stressful situations, including trauma, illness, contagious diseases, extreme temperatures, and hazardous environments. Employment involves working alone or in groups, in inclement weather, at all hours of the day or night and holidays, to respond to emergency situations and requests for assistance. May work alone or in large groups.
