UPMC is hiring a Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse to join our team at UPMC Presbyterian poison center.

Hours:

rotating between 7am start and 12am ending 7 days a week, working 4- 10 hour shifts

up to 50% work from home flexibility

Purpose:

The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse has responsibility, authority, and accountability for the provision of nursing care. The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision. The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, and patients to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession. The Sr. Poison Specialty Nurse responds to and answers poison information questions for health care providers and proxy treatment of children, adults and animals suffering poisonous and potentially poisonous substances. Interacts with health care professionals, patients, families, government officials (local, regional, state and federal), and business and industry clients.

Responsibilities:

Serves as a role model of professional nursing practice by serving as a recognized unit leader in one or more of the following areas: clinical expertise, teacher, specialized resource nurse, and/or evidence-based practice. Consistently gives appropriate feedback to all members of the health care team and participates in the nursing peer review process. Promotes change that enhances the quality of patient care and the unit environment. Serves on teams and leads successful teams as a part of daily practice. Demonstrates highly developed clinical assessment and analytical skills within the context of Relationship Based Care. Actively participates in shared governance at unit level.

Provide evidence-based general and patient-specific poison information in a continuous manner taking into account the age and clinical condition of each patient.

Provide and documents recommendations that positively affect patient outcome.

Receive telephone calls from or concerning poisoned persons. Request and record pertinent data, analyzes toxicity problems, determines type and severity of exposure.

When answering poison information questions, recommends corrective measures, and initiates treatment actions as needed. Refer poisoned victims to health care facilities when appropriate.

Interact with poisoned victims or other concerned individuals during periods of acute duress, calm the caller and elicit accurate information concerning the emergent situation.

Function effectively in emergency and often life-threatening situations.

Serve as a resource to and interact routinely with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other healthcare professionals, business and industry clients, other resource agencies, and other poison and drug information personnel.

Support poison center-related research. Maintain expertise in area(s) of practice through continual learning experience. Document activities through required documentation systems, departmental reports and quality assurance mechanisms.

Minimum 2 years experience in emergency medicine, critical care, or proven exposure to toxicology patients required. BSN preferred.Previous poison center experience preferred.Annual completion of approved contribution at the department, hospital, or health-system level. Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status. Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) certification from the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) preferred; Must obtain Certificated Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) designation from the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) within 2 testing cycles in which the candidate is eligible.Must work to maintain certification throughout employment at the Poison Center. After successfully obtaining the CSPI designation, it may lapse for no longer than one testing cycle.Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. UPMC approved nursing certification required. Approved contribution as set forth through UPMC?s My Nursing Career Ladder. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Registered Nurse (RN)

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
