Brown Emergency Medicine (Brown EM) is the academic emergency medicine physician practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Brown EM provides emergency department staffing for Rhode Island hospital, the only Level I trauma center in the region; Hasbro Children's Hospital, Rhode Island's only children's specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital, Brown EM member physicians and providers treat over 250,000 patients per year at our four clinical sites, drawing patients from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Brown EM is looking for several Hospitalists who are licensed in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and who will be responsible for providing observation services in the Emergency Department's Critical Decision Unit (CDU). The goal of the CDU is to provide observation services to Rhode Island Hospital (RIH) patients who require care that extends beyond initial evaluation and management in the emergency department, and to determine if inpatient admission of the patient is needed.

Primary responsibilities are as follows:

Triage RIH ED patients for medical appropriateness of admission to the CDUPerform bed control services for the CDU; including assessment of patients for the medical appropriateness of continued stay on, or discharge from, the CDU, and access consults, when appropriate, from other service lines on staff at RIH and cooperate with such service lines to care for CDU patients.Work closely with case management and utilization review as needed to serve the needs of CDU patients.Determine the medical necessity of continues telemetry of patients.Provide information to CDU patients and their families related to their current condition, diagnostic testing undertaken and test results, and plans for discharge from the CDU to home to another facility.Participate in the CDU's quality assessment activities, including participation in committee meetings, programs, and studies.Advise RIH on the operations of the CDU, including meeting routinely (at least monthly or in such greater frequency as circumstances warrant) with RIH's Director of the Adult Emergency Department to discuss operational issues affecting the CDU, such as staffing, recommendations for enhancing the CDU operations and changes in the CDU's current scope of services or in the delivery of services at the CDU.The qualifications for this job are as follows:

A minimum of a U.S. medical degree or foreign equivalent, Board Eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, and able to be licensed in Rhode Island.Must be a credentialed member of the RI Hospital Medical StaffAbility to handle confidential information in a professional manner.Ability to prioritize and multi-task.Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.Must have proficient computer skills specific to the MS suite.
