Description

Assists the Pharmacists by filling physician orders for medications for oral, rectal, topical, and injectable use; mixes IV admixture solutions as required using aseptic technique in the Isolator Barrier or other Air Flow Hood; type labels, prepares and files charge slips and performs other related duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, patient drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel.Rotate through all work areas of pharmacy.Repacking bulk medications.Unit dosing.Transport medications, restock drug delivery devices.Rounds to pick up physician orders.Preparing chemotherapeutic agents.Screen telephone calls.Prepares intravenous solutions and admixtures.Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.Aids in the training of Pharmacy Technician students or new employees.Prepares select reports as needed/directed.Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.Performs all aspects of medication dispensing in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner.Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filling various orders and prescriptions.Performs assigned quality control activities on schedule.Maintains professional, helpful, and courteous relationships within the department and with other departments.Shows the ability to deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.Ability to function as a team player.Keeps patient safety on the forefront at all times.Performs other duties as assigned.Demonstrates good communication skills.Follow policies and procedures on patient and employee safety as set forth by the Director.Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent

Maine State Pharmacy Technician License

WORKER TRAITS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and effectively, listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally.Basic computer knowledge.Automated pharmacy systems (preferred).Must be motivated and demonstrate the ability to function in a fast paced, changing team environment.Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.Demonstrates knowledge and skill ensuring that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled, and stored, and not outdated.Medium Risk Compounding---the applicable media-fill test and glove tip sampling test will be performed and passed annually, after the initial training and media-fill test is completed and passed. This will include a written competency of these skills and knowledge.Compounds sterile preparations according to USP797 and USP 800 for Hazardous drugs.Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean and protects employee from exposure to body fluids while working in various units.Completes annual education requirements in required time frames.Maintains confidentiality at all times.Maintains regulatory requirements, and adheres to Maine State Board of Pharmacy regulations, Chapter 7 as it applies to the practice of pharmacy technicians.Licensure as a pharmacy technician.Reports to work on time and as scheduled and starts work as scheduled.Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.Attends at least 80% of pharmacy meetings annually.Complies with all organizational policies.
