The Outdoor Experience Program Coordinator
will be responsible for connecting all youth with an intentional focus on bipoc and under-resourced youth to camping, outdoor education, and other related experiences and opportunities under the supervision of the Executive Director. The position will coordinate, plan, provide oversight, and partner in leading outdoor experiences and associated activities inclusive of the BOLD & GOLD Programs (Boys & Girls Outdoor Leadership Development). Doing so, In support of the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
Bachelor's degree preferred, 2 years working with young adults in educational or recreational settings required. 3+ years preferred2-3 years of experience working in outdoor recreation settings preferredProficient swimmer, bicycler, and backpackerExperience cooking and camping in the outdoorsWillingness to learn conflict mediation, restorative practice, and YMCA youth development skillsCurrent Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days)Current Wilderness First Responder certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days)Current Driver's License and ability to obtain a commercial license preferredJob Duties & Responsibilities
Attend the BOLD & GOLD program, and implement required training, lesson plans, recruitment, and evaluations.Coordinate and participate in programming and activities with YMCA camping services and the Metro Youth YMCA branch. Including planning trips, providing and/or arranging transportation of campers and staff, and living with campers in tents and/or hostels when off-site.Ensure that the BOLD & GOLD program environment, equipment, and supplies are Inventoried, Monitored, and safe for participants per program and Association guidelines. This should also comply with all risk management policies.Facilitate the learning of outdoor skills during wilderness-based courses, and ensure a physically, mentally, and emotionally safe environment while providing general supervision of campers both on- and off-site.Gather program testimonials, stories, and media as requestedCoordinate relevant information with other departments within the Y and work with agencies involved with the Detroit Outdoors Collaborative on shared initiatives while Acting as a liaison/support resource to Detroit Outdoors Collaborative.Perform other tasks deemed necessary and assigned.Abilities & Skills
