This opening is specific to Functional Nutrition which is a therapeutic approach to treating and preventing or reversing health conditions through food. Functional Nutrition uses a “food as medicine” approach by highlighting the ways that food is a fundamental component of health. Our Functional Medicine Dietitian works closely with both our patients and the Functional Medicine Physicians to achieve measurable changes to overall health. This is a hybrid position with both virtual and in-person visits.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Act as nutritional consultant and resource to members of the health care team. Provides comprehensive nutritional care including assessment, Nutrition Diagnosis, implementation of a care plan, counseling, education, and evaluation of outcomes to patients, families, and associates. Coordinates various education programs and seminars on nutritional topics.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assess the nutritional needs of patients by obtaining, verifying and interpreting data needed to identify nutrition related problems, their causes and significance.

Determine from patient/family, medical record and health care team the food and nutrition related history, anthropometric measurements, biochemical data, medical tests, and procedures, nutrition-focused physical findings and the client history.

Determine the nutrition diagnosis to identify and describe a specific nutrition problem (Intake, Clinical or Behavioral-Environmental) that can be resolved or improved through treatment/nutrition intervention by the registered dietitian.

Implement nutrition interventions to resolve or improve the identified nutrition problem. Nutrition therapy recommendations are based on individualized, specific patient care needs; including food and or nutrient delivery (meals, snacks, supplements, enteral or parenteral), nutrition education, nutrition counseling, and coordination of care.

Monitor and evaluate patient care outcomes to determine the amount of progress made and whether goals/expected outcomes are being met. (Food/nutrition related history outcomes, anthropometric measurement outcomes, biochemical data, medical tests, and procedure outcomes, and nutrition-focused physical finding outcomes.)

Monitor patient’s food tolerances to ensure appropriate food consistencies and assess adequate nutritional intake.

Collaborate and communicate with health care providers

Acts as consultant

Informs team of advances in diet therapy, unusual diet related lab results, or other pertinent facts related to the nutritional care of the patient

Investigates unusual occurrences/customer service complaints

Educate patients and/or their significant other as appropriate, on nutrition and special diets to be followed during and after hospitalization based on physician’s order to aid in maintaining patient’s health.

Educate patients and/or their significant other as appropriate, on nutrition and Maintain documentation of nutrition services provided in the patient’s medical record. Includes: Plan of Care, Nutrition Flowsheets, Education, After Visit Summary and written Handoff.

Develop and conduct in-service classes, community education and other health and nutrition offerings as requested or assigned.

Participate in special projects and committees related to the nutritional care of patients.

Maintain and enhance professional expertise through appropriate educational and organizational activities.

Develop and maintains educational resources appropriate to patient and audience needs.

Supervise dietetic interns/students orienting them to the profession and providing clinical teaching, precepting and mentoring throughout their program.

Acts as a liaison with the department of culinary wellness, both patient foodservice and retail foodservice, addressing patient, employee, visitor or staff needs.

Demonstrate professional characteristics and ethics by adhering to department and organizational policy and maintaining up to date knowledge and skills in field of expertise.

Perform other related duties as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or related field that meets the requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This can be acquired through the completion of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approved four year Baccalaureate degree program and an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited advanced Training program.

Master's degree or Advanced Practice Certification preferred.

Requires a professional level of knowledge of chemistry, physiology, caloric and nutrient values and physical properties of foodstuffs with an understanding of medical nutrition therapy.

Requires the ability to read, write and speak English; Use and understand medical terminology; Follow oral and written instructions; Perform arithmetic calculations; Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Requires a relatively high level of interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and work with medical, nursing and other health care professionals, patients, and their families.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

PREFERRED SKILLS:

Experience with plant-based diets and meal planning

Expertise in community education and teaching group classes

Understanding of the microbiome and its effect on overall health

Coaching skills around behavioral change and healthy eating

Confidence working with specialized diets such as; a low FODMAP diet, Anti-candida diet, low glycemic index diet and elimination or rotational diets.

Knowledge of nutritional supplements

Lifestyle medicine certification preferred or obtained within one year of hire, through the ACLM.
