The Mechanical Assist Department oversees the ECMO pump staffing and education of unit-based specialists. The department is structured with a Manger, an ECMO Coordinator, an AKRT Coordinator, 8 Advanced ECLS Specialists (AES), and 3 Mechanical Assist Flex Team (MAFT) members. The AES function in the role as charge nurses, education facilitators, respond to emergencies, and assist our Perfusionists with procedures and transports. The MAFT team are ECMO/AKRT trained specialists that care for patients on ECMO and AKRT in the ICUs. The rest of the ECMO team is made up from unit-based specialists from the Heart Center, PICU, and NICU. These specialists are trained in one or both of these modalities and care for patients in any of the ICUs. The difference between the unit specialists and the MAFT team is the specialists are from an ICU as their department, and the MAFT is more of an ICU ECMO/AKRT pump float pool. SLCH has about 50-60 patients on ECMO/year, is a transplant center, and a Platinum Award winner for the ELSO Center of Excellence. We are making strides to develop into one of the premier ECMO programs in the country, as we use the latest technology, we partner with Washington University physicians who are performing groundbreaking research, and are a major referral center in the Midwest for transplant services.
