Job DescriptionPrepares medications for inpatients, outpatients and employees as per departmental policies and ensures verification of each transaction by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.Responsibilities1. Compounds sterile and non-sterile products as per protocol, ensuring final verification by a pharmacist.2. Dispenses (with pharmacist supervision) and maintains accurate records of dispensing controlled substances, tax-free alcohol and investigational new drugs.3. Demonstrates ability to operate required equipment, e.g., unit-dose repackaging, total parenteral nutrition compounder, laminar flow hoods, etc.4. Ensures an adequate inventory of medications and supplies is maintained. Routinely checks for and removes expired medications from inventory.5. Audits controlled drug disposition records for patient care units and reports discrepancies and unusual use patterns to a manger or director.6. Maintains an accurate, current census, including cassette bin labels, for all assigned areas.7. Returns reusable medication to stock before the end of the shift.8. Accurately fills unit-dose cassettes and performs statistical count of all doses dispensed.9. Conducts all required deliveries and other patient care rounds in a timely fashion.10. Obtains required signatures when conducting controlled substance deliveries.11. Assures effective exchange of unit-dose cassettes as per established schedules.12. Maintains a safe, clean working environment.13. Maintains stat box contents. Ensures posting of drug lists in the pharmacy, on the transfer carts, and at the patient care units.14. Conducts monthly inspections of nursing stations, instructing nursing personnel when necessary to correct deficiencies, and retrieving medications not included on floor stock lists.15. Assists the pharmacist in providing drug information and in profiling patient medications.16. Conducts other professional functions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.17. Completes all required documentation18.
