*This position is one hour per day. 30 minutes in the AM and 30 minutes in the PM*

**Eligible candidates will be placed on a 6-month eligibility list.**

BASIC FUNCTIONUnder the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide for the safe street crossing for students; direct automotive and pedestrian traffic at a designated street intersection to assist school children in safely crossing street, assist in directing traffic to and from school grounds.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:The Crossing Guard is responsible to assist in directing automotive or pedestrian traffic in order to ensure safe crossing of students in school parking lots or designated intersections. This is a stand-alone classification within the Paraprofessional job series.

Examples of Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Direct automotive and pedestrian traffic at a designated street intersection.

Escort students across street at designated locations; utilize due caution and display crossing sign.

Assist in directing traffic to and from school grounds; communicate with drivers regardingappropriate parking areas.

E

Prevent students and parents from crossing street during the flow of traffic until it is safe to cross.

E

Instruct students as to the proper methods and times when crossing is safe; instruct students to walk bicycles across the street.

E

Report unusual, unsafe, dangerous, or improper conduct, along with vehicle license number to appropriate supervisor according to established procedures.

E

Notify police, school authorities, and ambulance in case of injuries or accidents at designated crossing.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities for the classification.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:Traffic regulations, especially those pertaining to pedestrians.School safety rules and regulations.Stopping distances of moving vehicles.Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.Student behavior management strategies and techniques.Basic written and spoken English.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT :Outdoor work environment.Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.Exposure to fumes, oil/grease.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Standing for extended periods of time.Walking.Seeing to direct the safe crossing at intersections with and without a signal and depth perception to judge approaching vehicle's closeness to an intersection.Hearing to be aware of children and traffic.Possess arm strength to hold sign up so that it can be seen by approaching traffic.Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.Dexterity of hands and fingers to hold stop sign.Requires speaking skills in order to communicate with students.

HAZARDS:Traffic hazards.Exposure to fumes and oil/grease.Exposure to noise.Exposure to extreme weather conditions.Walking on uneven ground and wet or slippery surfaces.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.

Effective July 1, 2020, all new employees to Poway Unified School District will be responsible for the fingerprint fee associated with new employee processing at the cost of $74 - cash/check ($76 for credit cards).
