Summary:

The Surgical Services Medical Assistant is responsible for scheduling cases electronically taking information from the telephone of via faxed reservation and for a variety of clinical and supportive tasks and provides basic patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse. This individual ensures that all practices are followed to maintain excellent records for all cases booked. This individual had documented training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analyzing patient specimens. Testing includes waived, moderate complexity; and those high complexity tests authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director. The training insures the skills required for proper specimen collection, handling and processing. This includes knowledge of laboratory procedures, proper instrument use, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration, a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage and ability to implement quality control policies. The individual possesses an awareness of the factors that influence test results and the skills required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results before reporting.

Responsibilities:

Follow the laboratory procedures for sp Assist offices/surgeons in posting cases to the surgery schedule.Works with coworkers in a friendly and cooperative manner. Schedules procedures for all of the Operating Rooms, Treatments Rooms, Procedure Rooms and Endoscopy.Maintains current with surgeon privileges and specialties.Communicates updates and problems timely and accurately to the Scheduling Specialist and/or Manager.Has clinical and social contact with patients, including all age groups, and is able to appropriately assess, care for and treat them according to the guidelines as defined by Covenant HealthCare.Assists with simple procedures and follows standard precautions.Performs vital signs, measures height, weight, and other data as requested.Ambulates, transports and positions patients with proper body mechanics, applying or utilizing special equipment as necessary.Collects urine specimens, measures Foley and wound drainage output as needed per RN direction Changes unoccupied beds, cleans rooms, performs dressing and gowning and skin care.Assists patients with presurgical wipes, clips hair preoperatively, cleans carts and rooms between patients.Documents all patient care observations and interventions in the electronic record accurately, clearly, in a timely manner following all established policies.Actively participates in quality management.Participates in patient care and unit activities to achieve compliance with all regulatory, patient safety, infection control, and safety requirements.Makes recommendations for improvements, enhancements, and resolutions.Ongoing evaluation of data for validity and integrity.Pursues discrepancies with users.Assists with orientation as needed.Other duties as assigned.Specimen suitability for testing.Perform waived, moderate and high complexity tests ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology for test analysis.Report and maintain records of patient test results.Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies.Document all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed to include troubleshooting.Follow the Laboratory established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the established levels of performance.Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.Correct the problem or immediately notify the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Technical Supervisor. Designated Technologist with at least one or two years documented experience in a high complexity laboratory, and as recommended by the General Supervisor, may be designated to perform Laboratory Charge Technologist duties for the Laboratory General Supervisor who is scheduled off duty.Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory established performance specifications.Comply with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices.Demonstrate working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and proper hand washing techniques.Trains new employees and teaches MLT and MT Interns as designated by the Manager.Perform other related duties as assigned.Demonstrate a positive attitude in the workplace showing dependability, cooperation, and desire to produce the most accurate, timely and cost effective results attainable.Demonstrates excellent customer service.Contributes to organization success targets for patient satisfaction and net operating margin.Age Specific Competency Newborn Infant Pediatric Child Adolescent Adult Geriatric.
