GENERAL SUMMARY Works under the supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Manager. The Phlebotomist/EKG Technician's primary job function is to perform venipunctures/other specimen collections, order/label, accession and prepare all specimens for Laboratory testing. Performs and processes electrocardiograms. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
•High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
Licensure:
•BMVL required (Must maintain eligibility to drive as determined by SOMC insurance carriers)
•Phlebotomy certification preferred
Experience:
•Previous phlebotomy experience preferred
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Identifies themselves and department and explains the procedure to be performed to the patient.
2. Verifies patient identification. Performs phlebotomies including venipunctures and fingersticks on adults and children/infant heelsticks. Follows all safety and infection control policies when performing procedures.
3. Labels, dates and processes obtained specimens. Transports and distributes specimens to the appropriate work center for analysis. Processes for analysis. Processes microbiology specimens as required.
4. Runs collection lists. Prepares laboratory pendings and specimens for transport to other sections and to reference laboratories.
5. Centrifuges specimens and distributes to work stations.
6. Performs and processes electrocardiograms.
7. Participates in training and orientation of new employees and students.
8. Cleans and stocks work area as needed.
9. Performs clerical and computer functions as needed.
10. Orders tests
11. Receives and electronically records receipt in Laboratory Information System (LIS) of all specimens. Assures samples received are appropriate for test(s) ordered.
12. Quick registers patient in Lab Information System, orders testing (LIS), labels and accessions specimens for laboratory testing. Enters patient, stay, order comments and/or special instructions in Order/Entry function of LIS.
13. Distributes all specimens to appropriate department for laboratory testing, gathers specimens for final storage, and retrieves specimens for "add-on" testing.
14. Performs other duties as assigned
