Position Information

TxDOT's Waco District Special Jobs (Concrete Crew) is looking for a General Tech II or III, who wants to combine their knowledge and expertise of transportation maintenance to improve the condition of our roadways. Special Jobs duties range from roadway maintenance, operating heavy equipment, concrete bridge repair, concrete spall repairs, flow-able fill, brush cleaning and much more. Salary/ Plan Grade:

General Transportation Tech. II: A17 $42,976 - $64,469 / Yearly

General Transportation Tech III: A18 $45,512- $71,055 / Yearly

Position Description

General Transportation Technician II (Special Concrete Crews): Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Technician III (Special Concrete Crews): Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

General Transp. Tech II

Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.General Transp. Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.Trains other employees.Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.Reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and design guidelines.Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/ tools, materials and products.Minimum Qualifications:

Experience : 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

General Transp. Tech III:

Experience : 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications :

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.General Transp. Tech II Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

General Transp. Tech III Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application, with "N" endorsement within 90 days of hire.
