The Department of Physics at Creighton University invites applications for a full-time

Prototype Machinist . The individual will maintain a machine shop housed within the department that serves the wider community of research faculty and students.

The machinist will deliver complex R&D prototype machined parts and components for faculty and student research by programming, setting up, and operating computer numerical control (CNC) vertical mills, lathes and traditional conventional machines. The candidate must be willing to work directly with graduate and undergraduate students as they complete class projects, advising and teaching prototyping skills that help deliver hands-on laboratory curriculum to students.

Basic responsibilities are listed below.

Maintaining the machine shop and its equipment

Regularly survey inventory and order supplies as needed

Work directly with faculty researchers on prototype design, offering expertise advice and creative suggestions

Operate standard and specialized equipment to produce prototype items

Supervise faculty and students whenever they are using shop equipment

Maintain a safe environment for all operations conducted in the shop

Research type of materials needed for a proposed project

Interfacing with departmental or university personnel as required

Work with faculty on materials for outreach activities as needed

Work directly with students (individually and in small groups) to educate on the design and construction of simple class projects

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

2-4 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in science, engineering, or a related field preferred

More than 2 years of experience in an academic setting
