The City of Vacaville is accepting applications for Aquatic Specialists/Lifeguardsin the Parks & Recreation Department. Come join the fun!

Aquatic Specialist I/Lifeguards are entry-level positions in which incumbents are responsible for the safety and general welfare of the public at the Walter Graham Aquatic Center and will provide instruction in swimming and a variety of water fitness courses, in addition to lifeguard duties.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:Maintaining order and enforcing established rules and safety procedures;Scanning designated swim area constantly to ensure patron safety;Making frequent facility checks and maintaining facility cleanliness;Performing First Aid and CPR techniques, in addition to water rescue and safety procedures;Instructing and interacting with aquatic program participants of all ages;Performing facility and equipment set-up, take-down and general housekeeping;Opening and closing facilities;Performing reception, cashiering, cash handling and recordkeeping duties as required; andAttending mandatory in-service trainings.The distinction between the classifications, Aquatic Specialist and Lifeguard, is related to the seasonal position which is outlined below:

Aquatic Specialists may work on a year-round basis; a maximum of 129 hours per month.Lifeguards may work only during the summer season (April 1-September 30); a maximum of 40 hours per week.Aquatic Specialist/Lifeguard positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits, and do not accrue leave time with the exception of State-mandated sick leave (40 hours per year).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

None required.

Experience:

None required. Six (6) months of experience in an aquatics environment as a competitive swimmer, lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.

Certification : Must possess and maintain the following American Red Cross certifications:Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional RescuerTitle 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel certification within 12 months of hireDesirable Certifications:

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalentTitle 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel

Certification requirements are a condition of initial and continued employment.

Must be at least 15 years of age by time of employment.

Applicants receiving a conditional offer of employment must provide a valid TB certificate and successfully complete the pre-placement process for this position before a final offer will be extended. Pre-placement assessments for this position include a Livescan (FBI/DOJ fingerprint review), medical exam and drug screen.

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month*. Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits (including CalPERS membership), and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (40 hours per year).

Part-time positions are not covered by Social Security and are not eligible for the City of Vacaville's retirement plan through CalPERS and are therefore required to make 7.5% pre-tax contributions into a qualified plan under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA). For the City of Vacaville, the plan is a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Nationwide Retirement Systems, Inc.
