Job Summary
Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director and the Director of Laboratory Services, and Laboratory Manager. Assists technical personnel with assigned tasks, instrument maintenance, and inventory.
Receives patients, correctly identifies patients, collects specimens from patients, transports specimens, and processes specimens.Core Job Responsibilities
Identifying appropriate priority of tasks, establishes and maintains lines of communication and rapport within the department and other hospital personnelDemonstrates knowledge on computer software and specimen managementEnsures priority of requests, arranging workload to provide for optimal patient careManages inventoryReceives in and distributes reagents and suppliesAssists in Medical Center sponsored blood drivesAdheres to confidentiality of patient information with interdepartmental and external request
Demonstrates ethical, honest and professionalism with all internal and external consumersEnsures accuracy with specimen receiving, issuing blood products, and performs instrument maintenance following standard proceduresUses department equipment (telephone, computers, software) appropriatelyEnsures timely turnaround of patient results (turnaround times, unfinished work list(s), distribution of results, communication with consumers)Follows up on internal and external departmental requestParticipates in educational opportunities and identifies area of departmental process improvement Correct tests are drawn and collected and orders are checked against computer system for accuracy and discrepancies resolvedPerforms specimen collection as neededAdheres to envoi mental standards for patient/visitor/staff safetyPractices hand washing and sanitation practicesReports unsafe conditions and responds appropriately to all codes and drillsPractices standard precautions with
all chemical and specimen handlingStocks and re-orders suppliesCleans and disinfect work areas, refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, plasma thawers, etc.Education/Experience Requirements
Required:
Minimum 2 year degree in Science - such as Biology, Chemistry, BiochemistryPreferred:
Phlebotomy work experience, lab assistant work experience, or other healthcare experience preferredLicensure/Certification Requirements
