Job Overview:

Performs all of the functions of a Pathology Assistant. In addition, performs and dictates gross dissection for Level 5 and Level surgical cases (CPT 88307 and 88309); performs and dictates the gross dissection for selected surgical and autopsy specimens, and assists with autopsies.Qualifications:Required:Two years college level course credit including college level science coursesThree years job related experiencePreferred:Qualifications include Pathology assistant (ASCP)Scheduling Requirements:Per DiemDay ShiftHours/Days VaryEssential Functions:QualityPerforms gross dissection and dictation for all surgical specimens (Levels I through VI) under the supervision of the pathologistDetermines if additional outside studies are necessary at the time of initial sectioningPrepares and writes technical and safety procedures for the Gross dissection/Pathology section.Maintains documentation relating to the morgue and grossing room (i.e. temperature charts, eye wash stations, solution usage records).Participates in safety activities and training sessions of the department. Practices the precepts of Standard Precautions and hazardous Materials programs. Is involved in all aspects of Performance Improvement, including collection of data, generative ideas for performance improvement, and follow-up of process changes.Service ExcellencePicks up, accessions and labels specimens. Files and retains specimens as required by regulations.Files microscope slides and maintains slide files. Retrieves slides and blocks from storage area as required.Retrieve pathology specimens for repeat analysis as requested by pathologists Labels, stores, and releases toxicology specimens to appropriate authorities Labels, stores, and discards specimens according to department procedure. Properly stores surgical pathology specimens, transferring to morgue storage at least twice a week.GrowthReceives/places calls to outreach locations and physician's offices as neededCarefully identifies specimens and requisitions before accepting from courierFinancialEnters billing codes appropriate to any additional studiesMaintains supplies, documents receipt, and ensures appropriate utilizationAssures that all information on requisition is complete and accurate. If not, then will call submitting location and obtain correct and complete information before accessioning specimenPhysician Alignment/Staff EngagementActs a laboratory Safety Officer and advocateSupervises the work of the other Pathology Assistant. Acts as role model to other staff members. Coordinates vacation and assignment schedules to meet the needs of the Pathology grossing area. Participates in the appraisal of the Pathology assistant.Accessions and assists pathologists with frozen sections.
