The Program Manager, School Dental Hygiene is responsible for overseeing the Dental Hygiene Team. This role, primarily administrative with clinical support as needed, involves working collaboratively under the direction of CHC's Chief Dental Officer and the Director of the School-Based Health Center to address both clinical and programmatic needs. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with agency policies and procedures, effectively implementing and managing processes. The role requires flexibility in balancing administrative and clinical duties, with the allocation varying based on staffing needs and organizational demands. While the position is primarily office-based, there is potential for remote work for certain administrative tasks.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPERVISORY:
The supervision of School-Based Hygienists
Reviews clinical outcome metrics for the program and collaborates with the Chief Dental Officer to identify and achieve clinical goals
Works with the CHC Dental Leadership and School-Based Leadership team to develop site-specific strategic plans for new services, programs, and modifications of existing services
Attends and actively participates in regularly scheduled meetings with School Based Program Managers throughout the month
Lead support for recruiting and onboarding new hires, including creating required training/shadowing schedules and introductory communications to team members welcoming the new hire
CLINICAL:
This position will be responsible for the financial and operational stability of the School Based Dental program, including meeting daily operational goals, facilitating supervision of assigned staff, and leveraging data-driven decision-making to ensure department goals are met.
Provides appropriate individualized patient education for maintenance of oral health
Emphasizes preventive techniques and compliance with recall intervals
Provides radiographic services, including exposure and communication with appropriate dentist, and proper documentation in electronic dental health record
Maintains appropriate documentation of services provided in the electronic dental health record
Maintains the treatment area, equipment, instruments and supplies in proper working order daily. Strictly follows safety and infection control standards
Maintains inventory and maintenance of dental supplies and dental carts
May provide oral health education in classrooms and in community healthcare settings
Reviews log books of all school based dental hygienists on a monthly basis and submit for review
Completes site visits quarterly for school based dental hygienist administrative assessment
Audits school based dental hygienists’ compliance with school based Dental Program policies and procedures, and reports audit results to and CHC Chief Dental Officer on timely basis
Conducts quarterly risk assessments per HRSA requirements at a sampling of school based dental sites
Provides clinical training to dental hygienists to include orientation of new dental staff
Occasionally assigned to provide dental hygiene services at a CHC fixed dental practice, health fair, or special program
Represent the CHCI school-based dental program at school meetings or other opportunities for outreach or collaboration with stakeholders
Provides prescribed full dental hygiene/periodontal services within the scope of practice for RDH in the State of CT and CHCI scope of services to patients in a caring and professional manner.
Assurance and compliance with agency policies and procedures
Effectively implements new clinical processes and supervises current processes
Oversees maintenance of dental equipment and inspections yearly
Provides support and clinical leadership to dental hygienists in School-Based Dental Programs through training, completes competencies, monitors chart audits, reviews manufacturing instructions of new equipment, technical instruction and administrative feedback to team as needed
Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of School-Based Dental Program, clinical, infection control policies and procedures, safety, Joint Commission/DPH/HRSA requirements, as well as operational requirements
Performs all necessary oral prophylactic services including initial examination, x-rays, scaling, polishing, fluoride treatments, pit and fissure sealants, subgingival root planning and curettage
Educates patients in the proper methods of oral hygiene and plaque control
Ensures accurate coding, diagnosis and appropriate use of dental EMR
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Skills and Education
Bachelor’s degree required RDH degree from accredited dental hygiene school
Licensure - State of Connecticut dental hygiene license
At least two years’ experience as dental hygienist and prior clinical supervisory experience
Minimum one year of supervisory experience
Excellent knowledge of all Dental Program requirements
Demonstrated excellence in clinical skills
Ability to rigorously and consistently apply program standards
Ability to provide objective feedback to dental hygienists based on operational and administrative audits
Proven proficiency in Microsoft Suite
Demonstrated excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
Ability to perform efficiently in a dynamic environment
Process/procedure development, implementation and improvement skills
Superior judgment
Effective communication at all levels in the organization with strong oral, written and negotiation skills, including public speaking/presenting
Ability to work collaboratively on a team
Sound organization skills and accuracy at all levels of the job
Experience with community engagement
Strong customer service experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities and deadlines
Preferred Skills
Associates/Bachelors’ degree in management or healthcare
Prior dental hygiene work within a community setting.
Excellent clinical and supervisory skills
Required Licenses/Certifications
RDH degree from accredited dental hygiene school
Licensure - State of Connecticut dental hygiene license
Current CPR certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires some physical activity - requires good to excellent manual dexterity and fine motor coordination; good vision; physical mobility and flexibility; light lifting required; potential exposure to blood borne pathogens through direct patient contact
Full-Time, 40 hours a week with evenings and/or weekends required based on program needs
Ability to travel to locations as deemed necessary
Must have reliable transportation and current license
Must follow OSHA standards and universal precautions
