Working/Functional Title

Professor and Chair, Department of Physiology

Position Summary

The Department of Physiology at Michigan State University (www.psl.msu.edu/)) invites applications or nominations for the position of Professor and Department Chair. Exciting opportunities exist for bold leadership to take advantage of a major expansion of translational research, education, and initiatives to promote collaboration between MSU campuses in East Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Henry Ford Health in Detroit. A unique environment exists to define modern physiology based on the presence of allopathic (M.D.), osteopathic (D.O.), and veterinary (D.V.M.) medical colleges as well as an outstanding College of Natural Science. The Department of Physiology has affiliations with each of these colleges, providing faculty and support for integrative and translational research in physiology and disease pathogenesis and teaching within undergraduate, graduate, and medical programs. These features provide excellent opportunities for expanded resources and cross-college program building. The ideal candidate will possess foresight and leadership skills to coalesce these opportunities into a new vision for the department and effectively implement this vision through recruitment of new faculty who will enhance interdisciplinary research within the department and across the university in alignment with the University (MSU 2030) and College Strategic plans. The department has 44 full-time faculty members across three campuses that enable a vibrant program of research and a broad educational mission (at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels).

We seek a candidate with a strong vision and commitment to undergraduate, graduate, and professional medical education and the ability to build relationships, promote teamwork, and facilitate collaboration across multiple colleges and physically distinct campuses. The successful candidate will have an internationally recognized research program that has been consistently funded extramurally. All areas of physiology-related research will be considered but particular interest will be given to candidates whose research supports and complements existing research strengths in cancer biology, immunology, metabolic diseases, neuroscience, and discipline-based education research. Applicants should hold an advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in physiology or a related field and the academic credentials of the individual must be consistent with a tenured professor appointment at Michigan State University. The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence, DEI, and supporting a positive climate as well as previous administrative experience relevant to the research, teaching, and service activities of an academic department. This experience would include personnel and budget management, research program building, and mentorship of faculty and students.

The Department of Physiology is housed in the Biomedical and Physical Sciences (BPS) building with 50,000 sq. feet of modern laboratory and office space with an additional 14,000 sq. feet of research space in the recently constructed Interdisciplinary Sciences and Technology Building. Extensive departmental collaborations exist across the MSU campuses. Departmental research is enhanced through access to university-supported bioinformatics, genomics, imaging, proteomics, and animal core facilities.
