A Speech Pathologist evaluates patients to determine the causes and effects of various speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders that affect patients of all ages. They investigate communications disorders and often different kinds of behaviors that manifest with communication difficulties.

A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) at Mercy Hospital's offices in Carrollton and New Philadelphia.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Provide clinical services to patients.

Perform diagnostic speech pathology test procedures.

Evaluate communication and swallowing function of patients.

Interpret and report test results to facilitate medical diagnosis.

Provide counseling and education about communication and the diagnosis to patients and families.

Determine therapeutic plans, including the need for therapy, frequency of treatment, focus for intervention, prognosis and duration of therapy.

Select assistive speech devices to improve the patient's communication.

Perform re-evaluation to determine progress after therapy.

Provide observations about hearing and other behaviors to help determine the need for other services.

Maintain records of all services.

Communicate results and recommendations for improving communicative function to referral sources and outside agencies such as schools and employees.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Master's degree in speech/language pathology.

Hold or be eligible for a Speech Pathology (SP) license from the State Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology.

Hold a Speech Pathology license in the state of Ohio.

Hold Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Completion of a nine-month clinical fellowship year.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to perform tests.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
