Description: Job Summary

This is a responsible and technical position within the Public Works Department with a wide variety of duties pertaining to the maintenance of vehicles and equipment for Boone County.The Fleet Services Mechanic is responsible for assisting with important functions within the Public Works Department, as well as, working with other Departments and Agencies within the County. This person must have knowledge of County policies, specifications and purchasing procedures.

Major Essential DutiesThe Fleet Services Mechanic will:Perform the duties of the Fleet Services Shop Leader in their absenceAssist with the maintenance of shop facilities, tools and supplies to insure that tools and shop equipment are clean and in proper working order; supplies are properly ordered and accounted forClean and sweep shopClean and refuel vehicles and equipmentAssist in the maintenance of records of material used, record keeping on individual vehicles and equipment in order to provide information for periodic reports as requiredMaintain and follow schedules for preventive maintenance according to the vehicle/equipment manufacturerDiagnose, adjust, repair, and service diesel and gasoline engines, timing and electrical systems, automatic and standard transmissions, clutch systems, air and hydraulic brake systems, manual and hydraulic steering systemsRepair and/or change tires, batteries, greases, lubricants, motor oil and transmission fluidMake service calls on location as needed as directed by the Fleet Services Supervisor or designee

RelationshipsThe Fleet Services Mechanic performs duties within the Public Works Department, under the direct supervision of the Fleet Services Shop Leader

Requirements: QualificationsEducation and/or ExperienceGraduation from a standard high school, vocational school or the equivalency supplemented by considerable experience in automotive and equipment maintenance or any combination of experience/training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform required duties in the Fleet Services DivisionLanguage SkillsAbility to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writingAbility to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, equipment manuals, and safety documents.Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimalsReasoning SkillsSolves practical problemsInterprets some technical and instructional materialMakes decisions which serve the county's best interest and follows the missions and objectives of the Public Works DepartmentCertificates, Licenses, RegistrationsAbility to obtain an ASE Certification in Automotive Repair and Heavy Duty Truck RepairPossession of a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver's licensePossession of or ability to obtain within one year ,a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky Class A commercial driver's license

Other Knowledge and/or SkillsKnowledge of the occupational hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safe performance of assigned dutiesKnowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and the characteristics and maintenance requirements of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipmentAbility to work with other department, county and other agency personnelAbility to work under general supervision
