Working with world-class inventors, investors, creators and entrepreneurs, we launch startups and collaborate with established businesses to accelerate new products, services, solutions and cures.This position will be filled at one of two levels. Experience and qualifications will determine the position and pay for the successful candidate.PurposeThe purpose of this role is to provide service and support to faculty, staff, and external partners in the development, drafting, review and negotiation of proposals, contracts and subcontracts, including related daily administrative tasks. This position is responsible for overseeing the negotiation and management of a high volume of funded and non-funded agreements, including:Sponsored Research AgreementsNon-Disclosure AgreementsMaterial Transfer AgreementsData Use LicensesSubcontractsMaster Research AgreementsConsortium agreements, including Industrial Affiliate Program and Research Participation AgreementsActively manages the pipeline of potential new sponsored research contracts and portfolio of existing awards with the objective of advancing UT research and generating new lines of research through partnering with the private sector. This includes coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to develop appropriate intellectual property models for corporate sponsored research.ResponsibilitiesCollaborative Research Contract Negotiator:Draft, review and negotiate terms of various agreements and amendments. Review subcontract awards for applicable flow down clauses and coordinating with subcontractors regarding terms. Demonstrate a willingness to accept responsibility for expeditious implementation of new corporate funded research contracts from initial notification through award.Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures, and federal and state laws related to sponsored research.Coordinate with counterparts across the broader Discovery to Impact organization: with Business Development and Licensing to holistically evaluate the appropriate pathway for intellectual property via licensing or corporate sponsored research, and with Intellectual Property regarding the potential for the proposed research to generate intellectual property of commercial value. Discuss contract terms within the Collaborative Research team as well as Office of Sponsored Projects and other UT offices to effectively move challenging deals to execution.Initiate meetings with researchers, staff and representatives of sponsoring organizations to facilitate discussions, conduct outreach and promote and strengthen business relationships. Check in routinely, and update stakeholders, for ongoing negotiations, and follow up when timely responses have not been received from faculty or sponsors. Propose solutions for resolving bottlenecks in negotiations, and escalate issues needing prompt resolution.Promptly respond to, and resolve in a timely manner, inquiries and requests for information or assistance. Proficiently research contractual issues. Address needs and/or interests of sponsors and offer more detailed reference information to faculty and staff members initiating industry contracts and other agreements. Contribute new information to a shared knowledge base for the benefit of all team members.Contribute input on strategic initiatives, such as optimization of processes and procedures.Other related functions as assigned.Senior Collaborative Research Contract Negotiator:Draft, review and negotiate terms of various agreements and amendments. Review subcontract awards for applicable flow down clauses and coordinating with subcontractors regarding terms. Demonstrate an ability to think creatively when presented with non-traditional research funding opportunities. Utilize experience with contract language to structure novel approaches that allow optimal value for research faculty while meeting the needs of the sponsor and minimizing risk for the university.Initiate meetings with researchers, staff and representatives of sponsoring organizations to facilitate discussions, conduct outreach and promote and strengthen business relationships. Check in routinely, and update stakeholders, for ongoing negotiations, and follow up when timely responses have not been received from faculty or sponsors.
