POSITION DESCRIPTION

Equipment Operator

OVERALL FUNCTIONS

Operates a variety of heavy construction equipment and trucks. Performs additional tasks in the maintenance of county roads, bridges, traffic control signs and storm drainage systems.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB

One of eight Equipment Operators reporting to the Road & Bridge District Supervisor/Foreman or Superintendent.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. ADMINISTRATION

A. Evaluates and maintains as needed roads, bridges and traffic control devices in the county. Snow removal in winter months – keeping roads clear and passable in winter months and blading roads to keep smooth in summer months.

B. Helps in placement of traffic control devices.

C. Helps in construction and repair projects.

D. Coordinates with the District Supervisor/Foreman and Road & Bridge Superintendent on construction and maintenance duties.

 

E. Maintains good, open communication with field staff, District Supervisor/Foreman, Road & Bridge Superintendent and the general public.

 

2. PERSONNEL DUTIES

A. Keeps current time cards, vacation/sick hours used, comp time hours taken/earned – faxes all info to Main Road & Bridge office

 

3. EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

A. Operates all motorized construction and power equipment listed (as time and schedule allows).

B. Operates listed small equipment and tools in the maintenance functions.

C. Builds/maintains roads to standards given by area foreman or superintendent, builds/maintains bridges and fixes drainage problems to current specifications and standards.

D. Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials, equipment and supplies.

E. Maintains and/or installs temporary and permanent traffic control signs.

F. Installs and maintains cattle guards.

G. Maintains appropriate drainage systems (ditches, culverts, barrow pits, etc.).

H. May be called upon to operate equipment and/or perform manual labor in any of the County’s five districts.

I. Maintain clean driving record & submit to random drug & alcohol testing.

CDL not required at this time, but definitely a plus

 

J. Must be self-motivated and a self-starter. Must be able to work alone and do a job without supervision.

4. MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT

A. Regularly cleans, lubricates and services equipment as appropriate (air, fuel and transmission filters; oil change; lube; changing transmission fluid; and changing blades).

B. Fills equipment with fuel as needed.

C. Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on equipment.

D. Fixes any minor problems that may occur.

E. Informs Road & Bridge District Supervisor/Foreman or Superintendent of needed repairs.

 

F. Takes oil samples when performing equipment service.

G. Maintains and forwards preventive maintenance records.

5. PUBLIC RELATIONS

A. Greets the public in a friendly, helpful manner.

6. SAFETY

A. Operates all equipment in a safe and prudent manner.

B. Maintains awareness of other vehicles, people and other safety hazards near work sites.

C. Controls traffic at work sites by flagging or posting signs to guide traffic through work areas in a safe manner.

D. Wears appropriate safety goggles, hard hat or clothing to maintain safety on the job site.

E. Follows internal and external safety operating procedures as established.

F. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

G. Reports any accidents or injuries immediately to the Road & Bridge District Supervisor/Foreman, Superintendent and Office Manager.

 

H. Strives to maintain an accident free work place.

I. Attends county and/or shop safety meeting.

J. Maintain clean driving record & CDL.

 

K. Submit to random drug and alcohol testing.

7. BACK-UP DUTIES

A. Works extra hours (Comp Time) when needed on projects and snow removal.

B. On call for fires/floods or other natural disasters around the county.

8. ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

2. The employee is constantly required to lift and or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is frequently required to lift and or move up to 100 pounds.

3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

1. While performing the duties of this job the employee constantly works with/near moving objects and works varying shifts. The employee frequently works outdoors; works extended days/hours, works in high places and works alone. Occasionally the employee works around fumes or airborne particles and infrequently works around toxic or caustic chemical, explosives and works in confined areas or indoors.

2. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
