The Work You Will Do:
The Chemist II (37020305), is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Chemistry/Metals Program Section in Tallahassee and will be responsible for analyzing environmental samples for trace metals and other related compounds or contaminants of interest to agency programs. Refilling this position is critical to satisfying ongoing demands for analyses necessary to support water quality impairment decisions and to providing support for other customers, both within and outside the Department of Environmental Protection, such as Operational Emergency Response, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Water Management Districts, and the Department of Health well water program.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.
The duties of this position involve the preparation and analysis of environmental samples for metals analysis using US EPA and DEP approved procedures. Analyzes environmental samples for metals using atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy methods according to the DEP quality assurance plan and Standard Operating Procedures. Collects, prepares and quantitates all raw data from assigned metals analyses to generate a report for review by supervisor according to Standard Operating Procedures. Completes all reports and assigned tasks in a timely fashion or as directed by supervisor. Archives and maintains all completed reports, raw analytical data and other supporting documentation according to DEP laboratory quality assurance plan and Standard Operation Procedures.
Performs all necessary rountine maintenance and troubleshooting of atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma- atomic emission and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy instruments in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures. Maintains all calibration standards, stocks standard solutions and externally certified reference materials as well as reagents and supplies for daily instrument operations. Records, updates and maintains all necessary instruments, standard and reagent logbooks according to Standard Opearating Procedures. Maintains clean, neat, and organized workspaces. Prepares samples for analysis as needed and assists in the training of chemists and technicians in sample preparation and analysis.
Assists senior chemist or supervisor in developing new analytical procedures for analyzing and detecting metals in environmental samples.
Position is medically monitored.
Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques of chemical research, analysis or testing.
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis.
Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
Skill in the use of scientific laboratory and field equipment.
Ability to collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to chemistry.
Ability to conduct chemical research, tests and analyses using scientific methods and techniques.

Required or Preferred Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering sciences, chemistry, environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, or environmental policy from an accredited university or college and 1 year of verifiable related experience; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of 5 years. Position requires participation in the DEP Medical Monitoring Program.
