What is the opportunity?

We are seeking a highly motivated, passionate and experienced technical data leader to drive RBCI's data transformation forward. As the Director, Data Engineering, you will be accountable for all RBCI data products and services. You will create new and innovative ways to leverage data across all of RBCI's businesses to enable RBCI to achieve operational excellence, win in client experience and lead in digital and technology. You will also define, support, and inform data strategy around data and technology to continue evolving the team and our data capabilities in alignment with RBCI's business objectives. You will foster strong engagement and provide leadership to development teams so they can deliver big data solutions for key business use cases aligned with RBCI's Realize 2026 strategy. Furthermore, you will interact with senior leaders to ensure that business value is being generated from the set of data services that the director is responsible for. This role requires a high degree of partnership, collaboration, thought leadership and technical acumen.

What will you do?
  • Lead the development of reusable high quality data assets for RBCI to support various consumption patterns (i.e. self-serve analytics, reporting, data science, etc.)
  • Partner and lead RBCI's data transformation to Lumina's Cloud Data Lake House platform, inclusive of collaborating on target operating model across the business and IT
  • Support the execution of initiatives that strengthen our technology foundation and enable the delivery of digital, analytics & AI solutions
  • Own the data product strategy, roadmap and implementation; relentlessly track and measure to user feedback and adoption
  • Partner with business leaders to thoroughly understand business objectives and technology requirements in order to best support and recommend data solutions, both current and future;
  • Lead initiatives to help business units become data driven organizations
  • Determine optimal data solutions based on project requirements, identify new solutions not present or build on existing solutions already existing within RBCI;
  • Accountable for Build and deploy processes and practices to ensure that data engineering meets and exceeds audit, RBC and regulatory requirements;
  • Manage multiple development teams
  • Manage external vendors, assessing feasibility of potential new vendors, current vendors and sourcing potential vendors based on industry knowledge and existing/emerging technology to support RBC digital bank projects;


Here's what we need from you:

Must-have
  • 10 years' experience in data engineering and database technology with a focus on end to end medium/large project management (1-2 years project cycles);
  • Experience managing multiple project teams
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, contractors, vendors and suppliers;
  • Experience with high pressure, complex, multiple stakeholder environments;
  • Ability to work closely with developers and other IT stakeholders and translate technical components to business leaders and stakeholders and conversely, translate business requirements into technical components
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Post-secondary education in computer science or other related field
  • Change management expertise
  • SQL and Python programming experience
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to impact and influence
  • Demonstrated collaboration across technical and non-technical teams


Nice to Have
  • Experience working with Snowflake, or similar, Cloud Data Lake House technologiesExperience with RBC T&O policies and governance Insurance industry experience
  • Experience working in an agile environment
