What we do:
The ESS Test Engineering Manager - Safety & Abuse is responsible for managing a team of test engineers focused on safety and abuse testing of the Energy Storage System (ESS). The Safety and Abuse team is the primary point of contact for comprehending the safety limits of the ESS from cell level to system level. The role collaborates closely with battery design engineers, Energy Storage System Design Assurance Engineer within the battery team, and multi-functional team members at the aircraft level to create and complete test plans necessary for design development cycles and compliance activities. You’ll be expected to lead discussions, test readiness reviews, provide expertise, and ensure that our team operates with the utmost regard for safety, both for our staff and for our customers.

What you can do:
Provide leadership and management to a team of test engineers, specialists, and technicians, this includes regular 1:1 meetings and group meetings to ensure proper and continuous collaboration across the teamIdentify staffing needs and lead the hiring process to grow the team as neededEstablish a robust culture of safety by identifying and mitigating risks to our staff and facilities. Encourage team members to adopt a safety-first attitudeProvide regular progress updates to the Head of ESS, Chief Engineer, and other Supernal Leadership organizations regarding current, and future development plansDevelop and implement high-level and detailed-level validation plans verifying the performance of battery systems and their components with a focus on identifying abuse tolerance, failure propagation, large-scale thermal and fire testingDevelop test strategy and plans for mechanical, electrical, and thermal abuse tests to verify and validate battery system for certification and functional requirementsDirectly support various engineering activitiesContribute to test equipment selection and implementation of verification & validation test processesDesign new safety and abuse test tools as neededAutomate test cases and develop test tools required for battery system abuse testingDevelop simulation and modeling methods for understanding thermal runawayDevelop diagnostic techniques for battery state of stabilityCollaborate with design engineers to develop next-generation productsMay require up to 25% of domestic and international travelOther duties as assigned
What you can contribute:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or chemical engineering required; Master’s or Ph.D. in engineering preferredA minimum of ten (10) years of experience in engineeringA minimum of two (2) years of experience with battery safety and abuse testing (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)Experience in setting up tests and labs for battery safety and abuse testing in the consumer electronics or automotive industriesExperience with LV and HV battery systemsExperience with data acquisition systems, sensors, and other measurement equipmentExperience in 3D CAD Design, Catia preferredUnderstanding of Lithium-based cell chemistries and expertise in battery safety limitsKnowledge of safety-critical component testing requirements like margin testing, testing for reliability, etc.Strong problem-solving and analytical skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsProactive delivery of communication and follow-upExcellent organizational skills and attention to detailMust have the ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
You may also be able to contribute:
Exposure to aerospace standards preferredExperience with using Python as a scripting language to process large test data preferred
