Masakhane (masa-con-eh) is a Xhosa word that means "let's build ourselves, for ourselves, together". Masakhane is a youth-driven organization providing community-based sexuality education in and around Newark, NJ. Masakhane’s anti-racist, pro-queer & pro-trans approach to sex-positive programming seeks to promote sexual liberation, including the right to pleasure, for marginalized communities.
We are seeking folks ages 16-24 to dedicate
Volunteers will work in teams of 4 to assist with: Creating educational materials that support in-person and online learning, and Planning in-person events, such as fundraisers. This will look like creating handouts in Canva, boosting our social media presence on Instagram (and TikTok if it's not banned) @masakhane, and doing behind-the-scenes research to bolster our existing Resources Manual. Folks dedicated to event coordination with work with our board members to set up and staff in-person fundraising programs in and around Newark, NJ, and as such, must be local so they can help with tabling and flyering in our community. Schedule The 2025 volunteer program will meet to collaborate monthly on Sundays from April to November, primarily over Zoom, eight sessions total. Volunteers are expected to attend at least 6 sessions to get the full experience. Summer programming (June through August) will be in-person in order to connect with the rest of the Masakhane community, including interns, board members, and community members. Tech permitting, there will be a virtual option for these summer sessions. Collaboration Sessions will be led by celeste (she/they) and will consist of coworking and training on a variety of sexuality topics. You will be expected to continue working your project(s) on your own time and report out at the following Collaboration Session. We will be meeting from 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm EST.
