This position involves performing complex legal work, including prosecuting misdemeanor and felony offenses in Butte-Silver Bow. It also includes providing legal advice to city departments, boards, and the Council of Commissioners, involving tasks such as reviewing contracts, personnel decisions, procurement procedures, budgets, and legal documents related to Superfund, zoning, and development projects. The work is conducted under the supervision of the City-County Attorney, with discretion for independent judgment. The role requires maintaining cooperative relationships with various officials, court personnel, law enforcement, and the public.
Examples of Essential Work:
Assist with civil lawsuits filed against the City-County.
Provide legal advice to city officials and agencies.
Review and prosecute criminal case files.
Participate in investigations, prepare subpoenas and search warrants.
Prepare charging documents and serve as lead attorney on criminal cases.
Research legal issues, interview witnesses, and evaluate evidence.
Work with victims and witnesses, prepare for trials, and negotiate plea deals.
Represent the City-County in court proceedings, including arraignments and trials.
Draft legal documents, motions, and orders.
Participate in sentencing and post-conviction motions.
Handle involuntary mental health commitments and juvenile proceedings.
Coordinate with law enforcement and participate in community safety initiatives.
Attend meetings, conferences, and ensure safety and quality standards.
Perform other duties as assigned, maintaining ethical standards.
Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate.
Legal experience at the level of Law Clerk or higher preferred.
Licensed to practice law in Montana.
Residency in Butte-Silver Bow during employment.
Ability to communicate effectively, conduct legal research, and operate standard office technology.
Sufficient physical abilities to perform job duties effectively.
