The Lead Communications Technician is responsible for overseeing and executing the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of structured cabling systems, low-voltage systems, and communication infrastructure. This includes supervising a team of technicians, ensuring adherence to project specifications and timelines, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
Lead and oversee installation of structured cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optics, coax, etc.) for voice, data, and video systems
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and project specifications
Terminate and test copper and fiber cabling per industry standards (BICSI, TIA/EIA)
Coordinate daily crew tasks, delegate responsibilities, and ensure productivity targets are met
Perform quality control inspections to ensure work complies with codes and project specifications
Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and equipment assigned to project site
Interface professionally with clients, contractors, and project managers
Ensure all work is performed following safety guidelines and company policies
Assign and prioritize tasks based on team capabilities and project requirements.
Monitor individual and team performance, offering constructive feedback. Ensure feedback is being shared with management
Ensure adherence to quality standards and project timelines.
Communicate essential information to employees and management
5+ years of experience in structured cabling or low-voltage systems
~ Strong knowledge of TIA/EIA standards, NEC, and low-voltage codes
~ Proficient with cable testers, OTDRs, and labeling tools
~ Experience installing pathways, cable trays, and racks
~ Excellent communication and leadership skills
~ EQUIPMENT & APPLICATIONS /WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Lifting and Carrying – Frequently lifting and carrying tools, materials, and equipment, often weighing up to 25-50 lbs.
Climbing and Balancing – Using ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to reach high areas for wiring and fixture installations.
Working in Uncomfortable Positions – Holding tools or equipment overhead, reaching into confined areas, or maintaining awkward postures.
Exposure to Weather – Working outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind
Pulling and Pushing – Pulling wires through conduits or pushing heavy equipment into place.
Carrying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Wearing and carrying safety gear like hard hats, gloves, harnesses, and boots.
