Rebar Estimator
I is an entry-level role in the construction industry designed to support the estimation of costs, quantities, and materials related to reinforcing bar (rebar) for concrete projects. Under close supervision, the trainee will learn to analyze project documents, perform material takeoffs, assist with cost estimation, and support bid preparation. This role is ideal for individuals beginning their careers in construction estimating and seeking to develop technical knowledge and industry expertise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Training & Development Participate in structured training sessions on blueprint reading, rebar estimating methods, and use of estimating software. Shadow senior estimators and assist in live project takeoffs and cost calculations. Project Support
Review project plans and specifications with guidance to understand the scope of work. Assist in identifying required rebar types, sizes, and quantities. Help input data into estimating systems and software (e.g., Bluebeam, Tekla, RebarCAD). Bid Support
Assist in compiling documentation for bids, proposals, and estimates. Help gather quotes and pricing information from suppliers and vendors. Administrative Tasks
Maintain organized records of estimates, project files, and historical cost data. Support communication between internal team members and external partners. Process Improvement
Learn and adopt best practices for estimating and data management. Participate in post-bid review discussions to learn from project outcomes. Market Research:
Stay updated on the latest material costs, market trends, and construction techniques.
Evaluate supplier and vendor pricing to ensure competitive sourcing.
Risk Management:
Learn to identify potential risks (e.g., project delays or material shortages) and account for them in estimates.
Compliance and Standards:
Learn building codes, safety regulations, and project specifications as well as how to
account for structural requirements and engineering tolerances.
Post-Bid Analysis:
Review awarded projects for accuracy in estimation versus actual performance.
Learn from previous projects to improve future estimations.
Qualifications
REQUIRED Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or associate degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field preferred. Basic understanding of construction terminology and building materials. Interest in construction cost estimating or rebar/concrete work. Willingness to learn and take direction is critical for success in this role. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
Working Conditions
Standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-45 hours per week. Some flexibility may be required depending on project demands. Occasional travel to project sites or fabrication yards may occur for training purposes. This is not a work-from-home position and will require in-office attendance.
Physical Requirements
This role primarily involves desk-based tasks, requiring prolonged sitting, computer use, and frequent handling of documents. Essential physical functions include manual dexterity for typing and writing, visual acuity for reviewing contracts, and clear verbal and written communication for compliance oversight. Mobility is generally limited to occasional walking within the office, with minimal lifting of materials (≤15 lbs). Strong cognitive abilities, including attention to detail, analysis, and decision-making, are essential.
