WORK ENVIRONMENT: The North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC) is a maximum security, all male forensic mental health facility located in Gainesville, Florida. It has a current capacity of 193 residents.
TYPE OF PATIENTS: The average age of our residents is early 30's. The goal is to get those committed as Incompetent to Proceed to Trial (—78%) back to their committing courts for disposition of their charges, and those committed as Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (—22%) to a less restrictive environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
- Must hold unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse.
- One year of acute care or two years of clinical nursing experience.
- Must be CPR certified, or able to complete training.
- Must be able to complete full orientation at time of hire.
- Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of position including ability to lift and carry 20 lbs., remain alert while on duty, and work 16-hour shifts on occasion.
CANDIDATE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess resident complaints and determine action, notifying supervisor when necessary.
- Admit and transfer residents to and from other units or outside sources.
- Administer oral and/or injectable medication and controlled medications in accordance with facility policy, and within their scope of practice as defined by Florida law.
- Observe for side effects or adverse effects to medication and report to assigned supervisor, or further assessment and treatment.
- Prepare paperwork as required for consults within facility and outside appointments.
- Coordinate residents’ appointments with unit staff to ensure medications are appropriately timed as need for resident movement to and from the unit.
- Provide emergency medical/psychiatric treatment within scope of practice as defined by facility and Florida law and notifying supervisor for further assistance.
- Complete incident reports factually and objectively, within the appropriate time frame as defined by the facility.
- Complete progress notes on resident care within the appropriate time frame as defined by the facility.
- Responsive and compliant with current resident rights and advocacy issues, adheres to and complies with facility policy.
- Maintain appropriate and professional behavior during interactions with residents, supervisors, and other staff members.
- Display professionalism throughout employment including, but not limited to, arriving to work on time, maintaining an accurate timesheet, and maintaining professional appearance as defined by facility policy.
SKILLS:
- Ability to speak and understand English - Required
- Ability to pass a level 2 fingerprinting - Required
- Must have a current State of Florida Registered Nurse license - Required
- Must have 1 year acute care or 2 years of clinical nursing experience working as an RN - Required
- Must have current CPR/ACLS certification or able to complete once hired - Required
- Ability to complete interventions with combative persons may be required - Required
- Able to lift and carry 25 lbs - Required
- Ability to stay alert for up to a 16-hour shift - Required
