The Senior Director of Project Development is responsible for leading the origination and development of new and existing high and medium voltage infrastructure projects, including transmission, distribution, substations, and utility-scale generation. This role involves managing all stages from site identification to commercial operation, working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders, and ensuring project success in target markets such as PJM, MISO, and SERC. Key Responsibilities
End-to-End Project Leadership:
Manage all aspects of project development from inception to operation, ensuring timely and budget-compliant progress. Site Identification & Land Acquisition:
Evaluate and secure project sites, negotiate land agreements, and build relationships with landowners. Permitting & Regulatory Compliance:
Obtain necessary permits, ensure compliance with environmental and zoning regulations, and manage reviews and approvals. Grid Interconnection:
Oversee interconnection processes, coordinate with utilities and grid operators, and secure interconnection agreements. Fuel Supply Coordination:
For gas-fired projects, manage fuel supply arrangements and pipeline interconnections. Project Planning & Design:
Collaborate on infrastructure design, optimize land use, and assess project feasibility and risks. Financial Analysis & Contracting:
Support project economics, prepare budgets and models, and negotiate key contracts. Stakeholder Engagement:
Maintain relationships with communities, regulators, utilities, and partners to facilitate project development. Cross-Functional Team Coordination:
Lead multidisciplinary teams, track progress, and align project goals. Reporting & Approvals:
Prepare updates and presentations for senior management, and recommend go/no-go decisions. Project Handover & Execution Support:
Ensure smooth transition to construction phase and support during project execution. Note: The Director is expected to travel up to ~50% to project sites, hearings, and meetings across multiple states. Requirements
Education:
Bachelor’s in engineering, Energy Management, Business, or related; advanced degrees preferred. Experience:
10+ years in energy project development, with a proven track record in utility-scale projects and market knowledge of PJM, MISO, SERC. Technical Skills:
Experience with site acquisition, permitting, interconnection, and contracting. Financial Acumen:
Ability to analyze project economics and negotiate commercial agreements. Leadership & Communication:
Strong management, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills. Organizational Skills:
Highly organized, capable of managing multiple projects and priorities. Other:
Willingness to travel, valid driver’s license, high ethical standards, and commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
