Naturalist Role At Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort
The naturalist's role is designed to engage guests of all ages in fun, interactive ways and excite them about South Carolina's nature, scientific features, and history. The naturalism's is to research, develop, and present educational programs. As the resort naturalist, you are the ambassador responsible for positively influencing our guests' and cast members' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about nature and encouraging them to explore the outdoors.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for completion of projects as directed by the leadership team
- Responsible for the creation and facilitation of nature programs for all ages
- Living off the low country: fly fishing, shrimping, crabbing, etc.
- Resort nature walk
- Beach nature walk, etc.
- Interact with guests and create magical moments
- Responsible for maintaining all information relating to native plants, animals, marine life, and other habitats
- Monitor and maintain outdoor butterfly garden
- Deliver presentations and hold conversations that are educational, entertaining, and that inspire conservation action
- Program/project development
- Develop educational and accurate support materials for resort programs as necessary
- Facilitate daily communications with cast and guest through personal interactions and responsible to update communication boards
- Responsible for maintaining show quality in the department and resort wide
- Additional responsibilities may include, during off season or staffing shortages, rental window, other non-nature programs, opening/closing resort, lifeguarding, etc.
Basic qualifications:
- You must be at least 18 years old
- This is a full-time position that requires you to be fully available any shift, any day of the week. You will also be required to be fully available on national/state holidays.
- High school diploma (or equivalent)
- This role is for someone who enjoys sharing their passion for conservation with others
Preferred qualifications:
- Education or background in wildlife studies, biology, marine services, environmental education, or related field
- Ability to facilitate and lead in front of large groups
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to be proactive, resourceful, and flexible in addition to being a self-starter with proven initiative
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills, as well as continuous improvement process
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills with attention to detail and impeccable follow-through
- Must be able to work with diverse personalities
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
- Minimum of six months experience with informal education in a zoo, aquarium, park, or museum setting
- Minimum of six months experience working with children at summer camps, YMCA, or other youth group settings
- Ability to swim 50 yards
- Ability to speak a language other than English
