Are you a High Performance Computing (HPC) Engineer interested in helping to develop new treatments for cancer and infectious diseases? The Genentech Computational Sciences Infrastructure & Architecture department is seeking a talented HPC Engineer to lead efforts in delivering and supporting scientific applications and workflows on our cloud-based and on-premises HPC platforms.
This role will leverage your experience in building, testing, delivering, and supporting scientific computing software in HPC environments. It requires technical leadership across globally distributed teams, advocacy for best engineering practices, and hands-on software development.
The Opportunity:
As part of our HPC team focusing on applications and workflows, you will help deliver and support:
- Open source and commercial scientific software used in HPC
- High-level programming languages such as Python and R
- Software packaging and deployment tools including Easybuild, Spack, and containers
- Software environment management tools like conda and pip/venv
- Direct support for HPC users and collaboration with international teams
- Engineering best practices and effective communication with non-technical audiences
Who You Are:
- 4+ years supporting scientific computing or HPC platforms
- 4+ years education or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or sciences
- Experience with compiling, delivering, and supporting software on HPC clusters
- Strong coding skills, especially in Python and Bash
- Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals
- Basic knowledge of HPC schedulers, job optimization, and best practices
- Experience with source control systems like Git
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with R, Posit tools, EasyBuild, Spack, Homebrew
- Knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD, and testing frameworks
- Experience with infrastructure and software delivery platforms such as CernVM, AWS, and managed services
- Leadership experience in Pharma/Biotech informatics or DevOps teams
Relocation benefits are not available. On-site presence at our South San Francisco campus is expected for at least 3 days a week; remote work is considered for non-local candidates.
The salary range for this position in California is $142,500 - $264,700, based on experience and other factors. A discretionary bonus may be available. Benefits are detailed at the provided link.
