Harford County Public Library offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting wage, depending on candidate qualifications, is between $15.00 - $19.12 per hour. Position Summary
The Custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building(s) and supporting an environment that promotes the love of reading. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the Custodian provides direct support to branch staff in the set-up of furniture for programs and events.
Essential Duties
- Uses brooms, brushes, mops, vacuum cleaners, buffers, liquid floor finishes, dust absorbers and other custodial equipment and supplies to perform interior custodial work.
- Maintains restrooms ensuring clean and sanitary conditions.
- Washes and cleans windows, light fixtures and other items which may require climbing and use of ladders.
- Cleans and polishes branch desks, chairs, tables, cabinets and other office furniture and fixtures.
- Collects and disposes of trash and recyclables.
- Maintains the exterior of the building including entryways and sidewalks by performing such duties as litter disposal, sweeping, leaf blowing, salting, and shoveling snow.
- Identifies potential safety hazards to include building interior/exterior, parking areas, lights and reports hazards to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Performs light maintenance including, but not limited to changing light bulbs, gluing carpet tiles, fastening loose items such as a doorknob and minor repairs as requested.
- Set up and breakdown of furniture for library events, including meeting and programming rooms, move furniture, office equipment and other supplies.
- Unloads supplies, delivers to storage areas and positions on shelves and storage racks, maintains inventory of janitorial supplies.
- Requests janitorial supplies through a branch staff member responsible for ordering janitorial supplies.
- Working knowledge of water shutoff, breakers and building related functions.
- Keeps loading dock organized.
- Keeps supervisor appraised of entryways and parking lot conditions in inclement weather.
- Show contractors where repairs are needed and help with their questions.
- Drives between branches to provide coverage as necessary.
- Reports as essential personnel.
- Serves on committees and participates in workshops, seminars and training as requested.
- Notifies supervisor with suggested ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of personnel and procedures and system-wide goals and objectives.
- Learns new skills and technologies to retain proficiency in areas of expertise.
- Is dependable and punctual.
- Maintains a positive, friendly and cooperative attitude and provides consistent customer service.
- Upholds all library policies and procedures as defined in Harford County Public Library’s Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED preferred, minimum completion of 9th grade education.
- Ability to read, write, and understand instructions, including work procedures, product labels, material safety data sheets and equipment instruction materials.
- One year of experience in a custodial, mechanical trade or related area.
- Ability to provide documentation and maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license with no more than 3 points.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable criminal background report.
- Ability to work day, evening, and weekend hours.
- Basic computer skills to include the use of email, internet searches and ability to use web-based employee self-service portal.
- Ability to understand verbal instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to operate vacuums and other related equipment.
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Ability to use hand tools applicable to trade and leaf blower, as needed.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and light maintenance in library facilities.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to set up, break down, and move furniture.
- Ability to work outdoors.
- Ability to be adaptable, flexible and patient with customers and staff.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic math skills.
- Work requires heavy physical effort in handling materials, up to 60 pounds, in a moderately strenuous work environment. For example, setting up and take down tables, chairs or other equipment for meetings or events, pushing and pulling cleaning equipment, and handling of delivery bins. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
- Work also involves continuous standing.
- Observes safe workplace practices including avoidance of trips and falls, proper lifting techniques, following fire regulations, and obeying traffic signals.
- Ability to travel to branch/outside locations is required.
- May require working in adverse weather conditions and exposure to dirt, dust, and unpleasant odors.
This position reports to the Assistant Branch Manager. Does not supervise staff. May supervise volunteers.
Work Week
Work schedule includes day, evening and weekend hours.
