The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Afterschool Program Director to join our collaborative, enthusiastic team. The person in this newly designed position will have the opportunity to energetically shape and lead KSO’s innovative afterschool offerings with creativity and vision for the future. The KSO mission is to serve our community through outstanding musical listening and learning experiences, and the Kalamazoo Kids in Tune (KKIT) program mission is to create an inclusive and accessible music community for KPS students during afterschool time, where sustained mentorships, friendships, and excellent music instruction result in lifelong positive outcomes. Position Summary: The Afterschool Program Director leads KSO’s Kalamazoo Kids In Tune (KKIT) and Orchestra Rouh afterschool and summer programs. The position is year-round. KKIT is an afterschool orchestra program offered in partnership with Kalamazoo Publics Schools, designed to increase access and reduce barriers to instrumental music study. The program is offered up to four afternoons per week after school and for up to 6 weeks in the summer, with tailored offerings for elementary and secondary students. Orchestra Rouh is a partnership with the Suzuki Academy of Kalamazoo, serving Arabic-speaking refugee and immigrant families and local peers through year-around instruction in classical and Middle Eastern strings and percussion. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Program Development: • Lead curriculum design and performance planning, in collaboration with the Artistic Directors of KKIT and Orchestra Rouh • Energetically supervise and support approximately 20 staff, including faculty, program and site coordinators, program assistants, interns and volunteers. • Design student recruitment efforts, working to ensure access for students with greatest barriers • Build and maintain strong relationships with students and families • Build and maintain strong relationships with school district and community partners Site Operations: • Supervise three afterschool/summer program sites • Oversee the work of Site Supervisors • Supervise coordination of daily services, including student busing and meals • Ensure adequate equipment and supplies are available Childcare Licensing: • Oversee school-age childcare center licenses, ensuring site protocols meet licensing requirements; oversee licensing record-keeping and documentation Promotion and Development: • Collaborate with KSO Marketing to plan social media, marketing and PR activities • Oversee KKIT and Orchestra Rouh social media accounts • Seek performance opportunities to showcase student achievements and create program visibility • Gather impactful stories and develop strong program documentation for grant and sponsorship requests Budgeting and Tracking: • Develop annual program budgets and track expenses and variances • Oversee biweekly payroll for program staff Evaluation and Professional Development: • Design annual faculty and staff professional development plans • Develop internal and external program evaluation protocols • Ensure thorough documentation of program activities and outputs • Lead engagement with KYD Network, Teaching Artist Training Institute and other PD/Evaluation partners Working Conditions: • The Afterschool Program Director will spend 20-30 hours per week sitting and using office equipment and computers, and 10-20 hours per week in a school environment, including significant time standing and walking. • The employee will spend a considerable amount of time in school buildings, including active and noisy environments, with large groups of students participating in meals, recreation, classroom activities, orchestra rehearsals and music lessons. • The employee will travel regularly between program sites and must have reliable transportation and a valid license. • This person will regularly move and lift equipment, supplies and materials up to 40lbs. • The workstation is in an open office area within a busy environment. The person must meet with others on a regular basis, both in the office and outside of the office. Hours and Compensation: • Salary range of $45,000-$50,000, commensurate with experience, paid bi-weekly. Additional benefits include free parking downtown at the Epic Center parking garage and complimentary tickets to most KSO performances. • Flexibility in schedule is possible, with frequent late afternoon and evening hours and occasional weekend hours required. Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music, or closely related field • Significant music teaching experience • Experience in a performing ensemble • Knowledge of symphonic, string and band repertoire • In-depth knowledge of best practices in Youth Development • Leadership and supervisory skills • Experience in community collaboration and partnership development • Excellent organization and communication • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-Suite
