POSITION SUMMARY:Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Service Director, performs duties of staff Medical Technologist such as preparing and processing specimens, performing Clinical Laboratory tests, analyzing and interpreting test results, and assisting with communication of test results to patients, physicians, and employees. Provides technical and scientific oversight of the CLIA specialty or subspecialties as assigned. This may include but is not limited to: procedure development and review, review of quality control with corrective action as necessary, equipment management to ensure proper function, and proactive research and process improvement initiatives of new technologies. Also assists Director and Manager with local management functions.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Follows St. Joseph Medical Center's HIPAA guidelines to prevent unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).Promotes a culture of safety through accurate patient identification, timely reporting, and non-punitive error documentation.Provides technical and scientific oversight for assigned CLIA specialties, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.Evaluates, verifies, and maintains test methods and systems; ensures corrective actions are taken when issues arise.Ensures patient results are reported only when systems are functioning properly.Performs clinical laboratory testing and interprets results following standard procedures.Documents and reviews quality control and proficiency testing in compliance with regulatory standards.Oversees orientation, training, and ongoing competency assessment for personnel.Participates in performance improvement (PI) activities and may chair or lead teams.Ensures availability of adequate supplies, reagents, and materials for efficient lab operation.Assists the Laboratory Manager with departmental functions including staffing, productivity monitoring, and performance appraisal input.Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment, ensuring prompt repair when needed.Participates in educational activities such as curriculum development and instruction.Collaborates with healthcare providers and vendors on specimen preparation, test interpretation, and instrumentation support.Participates in quality assurance and laboratory committees, and supports special projects as assigned.Adheres to the organization's compliance and ethics programs, including completion of required compliance education.Supportive of the compliance program set forth by St. Joseph's Medical Center and demonstrated by: Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Adheres to and helps to enforce all compliance policies relevant to his/her area Assures timely compliance education as requested by the Regional Compliance & Safety Officer and/or through corporate initiativesREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:Proficient in routine and specialized laboratory procedures relevant to Blood Bank and clinical lab testing.Strong technical and critical thinking skills for problem-solving and quality assessment.Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with physicians, staff, and external partners.Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.Demonstrates flexibility, initiative, and the ability to adapt to changing workloads.Maintains professionalism and accuracy under stress or in high-demand situations.Multilingual skills preferred but not requiredPOSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Equal Opportunity Employer Minorities/Women/Veterans/DisabledA minimum of five years as a Blood Bank Medical Technologist.Certification as a Medical Technologist, CLS (NCA) or MT (ASCP) or Certification as a Specialist in Blood Bank SBB (ASCP).If certified after 2004 must maintain active credential status to maintain employmentMT - Completion of a Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology, Biology or related science and successful completion of a CAAHEP approved program in Medical TechnologyHouston's oldest hospital is GROWING!Welcome to St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC), Houston's first and only downtown hospital delivering world-class care for the last 137 years and looking forward to the next century of exceptional care to Houstonians when they need us most.Whether it's for a scheduled surgery, the birth of a baby, an unexpected emergency, or an outpatient visit, we have staff available around the clock to provide you access to immediate, quality health care.
