Job Summary:
In alignment with the guidelines set by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Surgical First Assistants play a vital role in supporting surgeons during operations by ensuring patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes. This role encompasses various responsibilities, including preoperative and postoperative tasks, allowing for a comprehensive approach to patient care. Surgical assistants perform these duties under the direct supervision of surgeons, adhering to hospital policies and relevant regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Demonstrate competence in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
Assist the surgeon with preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative procedures at all times.
Ensure safe patient positioning based on the surgical procedure and patient’s needs.
Support the surgical team with patient preparation tasks, including catheter placement, IV placement, and tourniquet application.
Perform surgical techniques as directed by the surgeon, such as tissue manipulation, hemostasis, and wound closure.
Assess skin integrity and assist in patient transfer as necessary.
Follow patients to recovery when directed by the surgeon.
Conduct additional procedures, including vein and graft harvesting, under proper supervision.
Fulfill any other assigned duties, collaborating with both state and local policies.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Graduation from an accredited Surgical First Assist Program, or equivalent, is required.
Preferred: 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
Certifications:
BLS certification required.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist First Assistant required.
ACLS certification preferred.
