General Description:
Under the supervision of the special education classroom teacher, works with students in small groups, classroom settings, and individually to achieve the goals outlined on the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with students in various settings to reinforce learning of material and skills initially introduced by the teacher.
Assist the teacher in implementing special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on sympathetic understanding of individual student needs, interests and abilities.
Distribution and collection of workbooks, papers and other material for instruction. Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work as assigned by the teacher.
Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, etc.
Help keep bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays up to date.
Check and record student attendance.
Assist students with physical/emotional disabilities to participate in school environment and alert the teacher to any special information about an individual student.
Assist the student(s) to whom assigned in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, using the lavatory, etc.
Assist with the communication and set up of the IEP calendar and serve as the source of information for substitute teachers assigned in the absence of the teacher.
Participate in the in-service training programs and assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Assist teacher and specialists in implementing behavior intervention plans.
Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, ordering supplies, operate educational training equipment and operate a computer and assigned software.
Assist in administering various tests, correcting student assignments and tests and recording scores and grades.
Perform other duties/skills related to the job description as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of English usage, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, office supplies, and equipment.
Ability to maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of a fully licensed special education teacher.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Utilize interpersonal relation skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Ability to perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating, maintaining routine records, operate basic office equipment, and utilize basic computer skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years college (48 semester units) or compliance with NCLB requirements (reading, writing and math).
Experience working with teenagers preferred.
Physical Demands in the Work Environment:
High school classroom environment. May require lifting and assisting students with physical handicaps.
