ABOUT THE POSITION VHB is seeking a growth-oriented, entrepreneurial, and experienced engineering manager to serve as the Virginia State Transportation Leader. This strategic leader will play a critical role in shaping the vision for VHB's VDOT Design practice, driving market expansion, increasing project complexity, and elevating VHB's presence across the Commonwealth and the Mid-Atlantic Region. As VHB continues to grow and undertake mega projects, the Virginia State Transportation Leader will provide high-level strategic guidance, enabling the team to successfully execute large-scale, complex transportation initiatives. This role will be instrumental in building strong networks and relationships across VDOT, positioning VHB as a trusted advisor and industry leader. Collaborating closely with the Mid-Atlantic leadership team, the State Transportation Leader will ensure key wins, seamless project delivery, client satisfaction, and long-term market success. Responsibilities Set the vision for VHB's VDOT transportation strategy, leveraging deep industry knowledge to drive market share growth and expansion into complex, high-profile projects.
Strengthen and expand relationships with VDOT leadership and key decision-makers to position VHB as a go-to partner for innovative transportation solutions. Implement strategic growth initiatives, working closely with Mid-Atlantic leadership to align business development efforts with long-term market objectives. Provide executive-level guidance on major pursuits, including opportunity identification, strategic positioning, scope development, risk management, and project goal definition. Lead and oversee mega projects as Project Executive or Design Manager, ensuring delivery excellence and client satisfaction. Provide strategic technical oversight for large-scale transportation projects, ensuring best practices and innovation in design execution. Skills and Attributes Proven track record in executing and leading mega transportation projects. Strong ability to develop and maintain high-level relationships, positioning VHB as a leader in the market. Visionary mindset with the ability to identify market trends, expand service offerings, and position VHB for long-term success. Dynamic leadership skills, with experience guiding teams through complex challenges and evolving industry landscapes. Passion for mentoring and training design staff at all levels, ensuring the next generation of talent is prepared for complex project delivery. Strategic thinking combined with exceptional engineering judgment to achieve high standards of quality and financial performance. Qualifications B.S. in Civil Engineering or related degree (a master's degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience). 20+ years of professional civil engineering experience, with a strong focus on delivering complex VDOT Transportation Design Services; 25+ years preferred. Virginia Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Demonstrated ability to lead and execute mega projects across the transportation sector. Strong technical proficiency and ability to navigate complex projects with a strategic perspective. Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with a deep understanding of VDOT's objectives and market landscape. Ability to maintain a big-picture view of market opportunities, while ensuring the successful execution of individual projects. The base salary range for this position is $167,000 - 245,000 for the Washington, DC location. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
