The
Accounting Manager
is responsible for overseeing general ledger operations, ensuring financial integrity, and supporting accurate reporting in compliance with GAAP standards. This position leads daily financial activities including monthly and year-end closings, account reconciliations, payroll accounting, billing, and cash management. The manager will supervise and mentor a small team of senior accountants, support cross-functional collaboration with finance and non-finance teams, and contribute to process improvement. This is a strategic role for a technically strong and detail-oriented accounting professional with leadership experience and a commitment to continuous learning and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities:
General Ledger & Accounting Operations (80%)
Lead month-end and year-end close processes including journal entries, allocations, revenue/expense releases, and reconciliations Review and approve journal entries and reconciliations prepared by staff Oversee billing, AR, cash receipts, and revenue recognition processes Monitor payroll-related accounting and review payroll adjustments Coordinate and prepare audit schedules, work papers, and documentation for annual external audits Support the preparation of IRS Form 990 and 403(b) audits Reconcile investment and endowment accounts, coordinate with development on gift/grant revenue Maintain accurate records and ensure resolution of general ledger issues across departments Monitor new feature releases in accounting systems and recommend improvements Supervise and support two senior accountants, including professional development and performance management Plan workloads to meet deadlines and ensure quality output Collaborate cross-functionally with finance, grants, and non-finance departments Promote knowledge sharing and provide training and technical assistance to internal teams Requirements
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required CPA or Master’s in Accounting required Minimum 8 years of accounting experience, including general ledger, reconciliation, and financial reporting Minimum 3 years in a management or supervisory role Technical & Soft Skills:
Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial management Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) Experience with grants, Workday ERP, or nonprofit finance preferred Excellent analytical, time management, and communication skills Ability to lead a team and manage multiple deadlines with high attention to detail Authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship
