Job Description:
The State University of New York at Old Westbury is seeking a visionary leader who will embrace our profile as the most diverse comprehensive liberal arts university within the SUNY System with a historic mission of access, success, and social justice. The Vice President for Institutional Excellence (VPIE) will lead efforts to ensure that SUNY Old Westbury (SUNY OW) achieves excellence within each pillar of its next strategic plan. They will lead the University's inclusive excellence efforts, and they will support University compliance efforts, including legal matters.
This inaugural Cabinet level position reports to the University President. The VPIE will be a collaborative leader who organizes senior leadership strategic and inclusive excellence activity, provides content expertise, and ensures institutional compliance. This position will manage projects and initiatives in coordination with other stakeholders on campus. Ideally, they would have a legal background or extensive experience meeting compliance regulations. As such, they are expected to work with the Chief of Staff and SUNY General Counsel.
The VPIE will lead Cabinet and university-wide accountability efforts to meet the Strategic Plan's metrics and outcomes, and to ensure alignment with accreditation efforts. This includes partnering with the special assistant to the president for initiatives to manage performance planning.
They will collaborate with Cabinet and other internal and external stakeholders, and provide expertise and university-wide leadership for advancing OW's commitment to inclusive excellence.
They will partner with Human Resources and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to provide professional development and training for staff and faculty.
They will provide subject matter expertise and leadership regarding Title IX and other compliance matters, and serve as campus Ombudsperson, and The Lead Bias Incident Response Officer. The VPIE is a full-time, twelve (12) month, Management Confidential position requiring an on-campus presence and is not eligible for a remote or hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities include:
- Stewardship of the strategic plan to ensure stakeholders meet goals. This includes producing reports.
- Oversee the collection and reporting of data, and investigation of complaints filed under applicable Federal and State of New York Statutes.
- Create and advance OW's inclusive excellence roadmap.
- Be the University's Ombudsperson and manage response to bias-related incidents.
- Supervise the Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
- Provide professional development for faculty and staff.
- Be SUNY liaison for all issues related to inclusive excellence.
- Provide compliance and legal support, in partnership with SUNY General Counsel.
Experience:
- Working knowledge of inclusive excellence concepts and programs, as well as relevant regulatory environment considerations and national trends, particularly relating to higher education.
- Experience with developing and implementing institutional policies related to inclusive excellence.
- Knowledge of the compliance infrastructure in relation to reports of alleged discrimination, harassment, and/or sexual misconduct, and appreciation for the need to work in partnership to ensure appropriate institutional responses.
- Strong management and leadership skills, including exceptional team leadership, training, coaching, and mentoring ability.
- Crisis management and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to manage multiple high-pressure demands.
- Excellent communication skills with demonstrated experience in making high-level presentations to senior and board-level leaders.
- Experience in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with various stakeholders.
- Highly developed interpersonal, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for a consultative and collaborative approach.
- Demonstrated ability to design and build consensus around bold, creative, and innovative initiatives.
- Demonstrated commitment to making higher education more inclusive and equitable.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree or Juris Doctorate.
- At least seven (7) years of demonstrated relevant experience with proven advancement of strategic plans, inclusive excellence, and compliance, as critical components of institutional excellence.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience writing and advancing strategic plans.
- Ten (10) years of demonstrated relevant experience with proven advancement of inclusive excellence.
- Experience as a compliance officer.
- Experience as a senior-level administrator with experience reporting to the President/CEO or Vice President of an organization.
- Demonstrated skill in leading and directing teams, providing coaching and mentoring to develop individuals and ensure their success.
- Ability to build relationships to effectively understand the needs of diverse populations and translate those to campus initiatives.
- Working knowledge of relevant laws and regulations such as Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Affirmative Action, Title IX, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
