Job Details

Reporting directly to the MEP Supervisor, the Campus Electrician plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems. This position involves a diverse range of responsibilities, including installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical infrastructure. Collaborates closely with other facilities staff and campus departments to support the overall functioning of the community. Possess strong analytical skills in determining appropriate repair methods. A self-motivated, self-supervising individual with excellent customer service and communication skills. This position participates in the MEP shop’s on-call rotation and responds to emergencies including inclement weather as needed.

DUTIES

Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment in buildings, including classrooms, dormitories, administrative offices, and athletic facilities.

Perform routine inspections of electrical systems to identify and address potential issues before they escalate.

Responds promptly to electrical service requests and emergencies, prioritizing tasks based on urgency and impact on operations.

Performs preventive maintenance from inspections or work orders generated from the computerized Preventive Maintenance system up to or above the manufacturer.

Ensures that supplies and tools are maintained neatly and in their proper location to perform maintenance tasks as necessary.

Collaborate with other facilities staff to support campus events, projects, and initiatives requiring electrical assistance.

Performs the installation of temporary power, equipment, or electrical hook-up for special events in areas where no power is available while focusing on the safety of personnel and surrounding areas.

Demonstrated knowledge of electrical principles, codes, and regulations, including the National Electrical Code (NEC). Ensures all work performed on campus meets or exceeds regulations.

Ensures all repairs are performed to the highest level of craftsmanship, paying close attention to detail.

Maintain accurate records of work performed, including maintenance schedules, service logs, and equipment inventories.

Stay informed about advancements in electrical technology and industry best practices and make recommendations for improvements to campus infrastructure.

Adhere to all relevant safety protocols and procedures, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Essential personnel that may be required to work during inclement weather or other emergency events. Serves on the shop’s on-call rotation.

Picks up litter, trash, and sticks as needed on campus.

Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • A valid Virginia driver’s license required.
  • High School Diploma or GED Required.
  • Required 5+ years of experience within the electrical trade.
  • Minimum valid Virginia Journeyman Electrician license required. Master-level preferred. Out-of-state licenses will be considered based upon reciprocity.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • OSHA and first aid/CPR training preferred.
