Overview of Organization:

Assistance League of Los Angeles turns despair into hope for LA’s most vulnerable population: children living in poverty. Our programs provide educational support, arts enrichment, quality preschool, school supplies, and emergency clothing and necessities. The League helps remove barriers to education, helping disadvantaged kids stay in school so they may lead fulfilling, productive lives.

Overview of Position:

The Human Resources Director is responsible for directing and overseeing all Human Resources functions including employment, compensation, benefits, employee relations, workers’ compensation, unemployment claims and appeals, litigation, staff training, and other.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

In coordination with the Chief Executive Officer, the HR Director establishes the strategic direction for Human Resources; developing and implementing human resources policies and procedures that support the goals and mission of the organization.

Manages the relationship and works closely with Professional Employer Organization (PEO) to ensure compliance in all aspects of human resources.

Monitors PEO-offered benefits and compensation programs; monitors the marketplace for changes in compensation and benefits practices; and recommends changes to ensure the League is competitive.

Ensures the League complies with federal and state laws; ensures all supervisory staff are trained to support these policies; advises management on major employee problems and liability, if any.

Is responsible for state and federal employment claims.

Ensures all mandatory training, such as workplace safety and sexual harassment, are provided as required.

Serves as an active liaison to the CEO on all employee relations issues and concerns as they arise.

Promotes and demonstrates positive workplace culture at all sites to emphasize inclusivity, diversity, integrity, and professionalism.

Is responsible for recruiting and hiring all exempt and non-exempt staff.

Manages independent contractor agreements, engagement, and termination of services.

Works with managers to determine staff development and training needs, onboarding, performance management, and discipline.

Oversees and participates in employee relations functions including resolution of employee issues and concerns.

Provides guidance to managers regarding direct reports’ performance. Oversees all employee counseling, verbal and written warnings, performance improvement plans, and disciplinary actions.

Monitors and oversees employee resignations and involuntary terminations. Consults with legal counsel as necessary.

Manages annual employee performance review process.

Develops and recommends all human resources policies and programs; implements policies and provides associated training.

Works with insurance brokers on annual renewals and other requirements.

Oversees maintenance of personnel files and records including HRIS, ensuring confidentiality; ensures preparation and submission of employee information to PEO and government agencies as required by law.

Oversees planning and execution of staff meetings and staff events.

Supervises Receptionist / Executive Assistant and Preschool Program Director.

Is an integral member of the League’s Senior Management team.

Has other program responsibilities.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree and 7 years of Human Resources generalist experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current HR certification strongly preferred.

Experience working with HRIS systems and other software programs.

Human Resources management experience in non-profit setting strongly preferred.

Qualifications:

Effective oral and written communication skills sufficient to write policies and reports and make presentations to the Board, staff, and the public.

Excellent skills in communicating orally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and motivate people at all levels.

Second language skills are desirable but not required.

Job Classification / Salary:

Exempt level position. Hiring range starts at $92,000 per year, depending on experience. Benefits package includes generous health benefits, paid vacation and sick time, 401K with employer match, education reimbursement program, and more.
