ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

The San Francisco Symphony is widely considered to be among the most artistically adventurous and innovative arts institutions in the United States, celebrated for its artistic excellence, creative performance concepts, active touring, award-winning recordings, and standard-setting education programs. In the 202021 season, the San Francisco Symphony welcomed conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen as its twelfth Music Director and embarked on a new vision for the present and future of the orchestral landscape.

JOB SUMMARY

The Director, Legacy Giving (DLG) has overall responsibility for developing, integrating, and expanding a dynamic and comprehensive planned giving and endowment building program for the San Francisco Symphony. The DLG reports directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) and will manage one team member. The DLG will maintain a portfolio of 60+ top planned giving and endowment donors and prospects, responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio totaling $3M-$5M annually.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee the implementation of a strategic, comprehensive, and long-range approach for legacy giving in support of annual operations, the endowment, and a comprehensive capital campaign.

Actively engage and elevate a portfolio of 60+ trustees and donors undertaking an integrated approach to expanding the SFS community and achieving revenue goals.

Qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward planned gifts made to the SFS, as well as support the negotiation and documentation of all complex gifts to the SFS.

Regularly update and refine strategic priorities and goals to strategically grow the organizations legacy giving philanthropic and membership pipeline.

Develop and implement marketing strategies, presentations, reports, and other collateral to promote the legacy giving program.

Produce short-term and long-range analyses of the SFSs planned giving and endowment needs and approaches.

Lead acceptance process for endowment and planned gifts including the development of solicitation proposals, gift agreements, complex gift valuations, and stewardship plans.

Oversee all aspects of legacy giving administration including the facilitation of non-cash gifts, split-interest gifts, and endowment fund gifts.

Design and maintain a robust stewardship plan for Pierre Monteux Society members.

Manage Legacy Giving Committee and attend Board and other committee meetings as needed.

Assess the SFSs endowment building recognition efforts and results.

In coordination with the CPO, maintain and implement the Symphonys Gift Acceptance Policy and Procedures.

Supervise the Legacy Giving Officer.

Prepare and provide training and mentorship to all Gift Officers on legacy giving topics.

Remain current on planned giving and endowment building best practices.

Establish and maintain a Planned Giving Council filled with Bay Area estate attorneys, financial/estate planners, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of the principles and practices of planned giving and endowment building with a minimum of 7-10 years of progressive responsibility.

Related advanced degree or professional license preferred.

Excellent donor or similar constituent-based relationship skills.

Progressive experience in the design, implementation, and management of complex strategies for successful cultivation and solicitation of legacy gifts.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Strong analytical and organizational skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and donor database software.

Willing to attend concerts and events, regularly on nights and weekends.

Able to travel around the Bay Area and northern California as needed.
