Job Description
Palm Tran, Inc. is seeking professional Bus Operators with excellent customer service and communication skills. This position is responsible for performing skilled work operating all public transit vehicles on all scheduled routes and special services throughout Palm Beach County. Work involves operating diesel powered passenger buses over prescribed routes within set areas and maintaining records and logs, as may be required along with accurate passenger counts. Bus Operators have the responsibility for the safety of their passengers, the vehicle operated, and for completing the assigned route within the prescribed time schedule. Assigned schedules are based on bids and seniority. Employees in this position provide general information to passengers and/or general public, as requested.
This is an "essential employee" position required to work during disaster or emergency declarations. This position is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) classification.Operates a Palm Tran passenger bus according to established routes and schedules.Conducts a pre-trip inspection of equipment.Monitors fare collections; provides general information to passengers.Keys in passenger count.Observes all safety rules in accordance to Palm Tran, Federal, State and Local authorities.Communicates via two-way radio with dispatcher/supervisor.Reports all incidents/accident to supervisor and completes written reports.Operates all ADA compliant bus equipment to assist passengers boarding the bus.Secures all mobility devices per agency policy.Participates in planning meetings and operates bus in safe and efficient manner.Reports any conditions or concerns to the supervisors before transporting passengers.Treats passengers respectfully and assists them by answering service-related questions.Follows safe bus (un)loading procedures, including safety restraints.Follows policy and procedures to ensure all passengers exited the bus at end of route.In the event of an accident/emergency, evacuates passengers and assures that medical emergency procedures are followed.Ability to apply rational understanding and carryout instructions in written, oral and diagram form.Ability to comprehend and interpret documents.Ability to operate the assigned vehicle in a safe manner.Ability to lift a minimum of twenty (20) pounds.Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.Ability to keep simple records accurately.Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Palm Tran's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations (i.e. de-escalation skills).Ability to work in a team environment, independently, with minimal supervision.Ability to work various hours including nights, weekends and holidays.Ability to maintain regular attendance to assure efficient and effective performance of job duties. Ability to handle stress and continue to perform all duties and provide service to the public in a courteous, responsible and timely manner.Ability to quickly exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying departmental policies and procedures.Ability to utilize two-way communication systems.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, contract employees, superiors, other departmental employees, customers, and the public.Knowledge of operational characteristics of passenger buses.Knowledge of Federal, State and County traffic motor vehicle regulations.Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, and policies related to customer service activities.Knowledge of routes, locations, travel patterns and local geography to assure timely services and accurate information.
Certificates/Security Clearances/Other
Valid Class E Driver's License. Individuals who are hired with Class E Driver's License will be provided paid training. (Must include a copy of your current driver's license with application.)

Preferences:Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B with Passenger (P) endorsement OR CDL Learner's Permit with Passenger (P) endorsement.
